HIGH SCHOOL ALL AREA
The Winona Daily News has released their All Area team. Kate Horihan of Mabel-Canton is their Player of the Year.
One player that helped shape Horihan was Karlie Urbaniak, now at Fairfield.
There were a couple of players in the running for POY: one was Katie Speedling of Wabasha-Kellogg.

BIG 12: Iowa State swept Kansas with a margin of 10 points. Diane Kieger (Mounds View) had 4.5 points.

MISSOURI VALLEY: Missouri State swept Northern Iowa with a margin of 14 points in the MVC championship match. Amy Sampson (Champlin Park) had 11 points for UNI.

PAC 10: Washington State beat Arizona in five with a margin of 11 points. WSU led 2-0. Emily Rooney (Red Wing) had 13 points for WSU.

MIDWEST

BIG 10 RESULTS
Minnesota beat Michigan State in four with a margin of 16 points. Kyla Roehrig had 14.5 points for Minnesota. Lauren Gibbemeyer (Cretin-Derham Hall) had 13 points for the Gophers. Becca Zlabis had 17.5 points for MSU.

#15 Illinois swept Northwestern with a margin of 24 points. Laura DeBruhler and Kylie McCulley had 17.5 points for Illinois. Chelsy Hyser had 14.5 points for NW. Naomi Johnson (Bloomington Kennedy) played, but did not score for the Wildcats.

Indiana beat Ohio State in four. Strangely enough the margin was zero. Ashley Benson had 20 points for Indiana. Katie Dull and Kristin Dozier each had 16 points for OSU. Susan Halverson (Apple Valley) had 8 digs and 1 point for the Buckeyes.

Penn State swept Michigan with a margin of 22 points. Megan Hodge had 18.5 points for PSU. Alex Hunt had 10 points for Michigan.

Purdue beat Wisconsin in five. The Badgers had a 1 point advantage on the day. Stephanie Lynch had 24.5 points for Purdue. Brittney Dolgner had 20.5 points for Wisconsin. Nikki Klingsporn (Tartan) had 31 assists and 1 point for the Badgers.

#1 Penn State swept Ohio State with a margin of 20 points. The final set was 30-28, the tightest set for PSU this season. Arielle Wilson had 14 points for PSU. Katie Dull had 17 points of OSU. Susan Halverson (Apple Valley) had 3 digs for the Buckeyes.

ACC: Virginia beat Virginia Tech in five. The point margin was zero. Virginia led 2-0. Marlow Bruneau (Lakeville) had 20 assists and 5 points for Virginia.

North Carolina won the ACC title with a sweep over NC State. The margin was 30 points. Brianna Eskola (Columbia Heights) had 16 digs for the Tar Heels and in the process set the ACC career digs record.

BIG EAST: Cincinnati swept UAB with a margin of 18 points. Kelsey Brandl (Lakeville North) had 6 points for Cincy.
Western Michigan swept Marquette with a margin of 32 points. Leslie Bielski (Chaska) and Tiara Russell (Osseo) had 9 and 3.5 points for Marquette.

BIG SKY: Eastern Washington swept Weber State with a margin of 16 points. Jackson County Central's Leah Burmeister and Brittney Bisaillon had 7 and 6 points for WS.

Earlier in the day WS beat Montana in five with a margin of 1 point. Montana led 2-1. Jackson County Central's Leah Burmeister and Brittney Bisaillon had 19.5 and 14.5 points for WS

MID AMERICAN: Ohio swept Dayton with a margin of 16 points. Amanda Andersen (Centennial) had 6 points for Ohio.

Here is more on the Stina Leiseth of YME and her tragic accident. Funeral services for Leiseth will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Granite Falls High School Gymnasium. CAR ACCIDENT
Stina Leiseth of Yellow Medicine East was killed in a one car roll over Wednesday afternoon. Leiseth was named to the West Central Tribune's All Area teams and Marshall Independent. From the West Central Tribune.

COLLEGE REPORTS
BIG 10: Gopher freshman setter Alex Blatt is Off Topic in the MN Daily.

An NCAA tournament berth is on the line for Wisconsin. The Badgers face #16 Illinois and #18 Purdue this weekend.

BIG 12: Iowa State's Diane Kieger (Mounds View) is in Kaylee's Corner---this is a video.

BIG SKY: The Big Sky has released their all conference team with Weber State's Brittany Bissailon was named to the first team. Leah Burmeister was Honorable Mention. Both are from Jackson County Central.

MISSOURI VALLEY: Northern Iowa beat Evansville in four with a margin of 22 points in the MV Tournament. Amy Sampson (Champlin Park) had 17 points for UNI. Sampson was named to the first team in the Missouri Valley All Conference team.

High School Review 2008

YEAR IN REVIEW 2008
Here is the Thanksgiving Year in review for the High School Season 2008. Keep in mind these "awards" are based only on what I saw over the course of the 14 weeks during the fall season. I am sure there are other worthy players, games, teams, coaches....but if I didn't see it, I can't vote on it.

ATMOSPHERE
BEST GYM: Bethlehem Academy when Marshall came calling. Permanent theater seating.

MOST "INTO IT" CROWD: Alexandria's student section in the Halloween 8AAA final vs STMA. Costumes galore. In fact I had to move because they kept standing blocking my view of the action.

BEST PROGRAM/YEARBOOK TEAM: I guess this is more in the yearbook category---Andover. The used quality paper, had color photos, and the thing that sealed the deal, historical records/awards celebrating their past.
Honorable mentions go to Hopkins and Champlin Park

BEST PROGRAM SECTION: This is a three way tie---Sections 3AAA, 4AAA, and 5AAA. All three have photos of the teams involved. That is a great resource and great keepsake. It is too bad other sections don't have the same opportunities.

OUT OF 5
Best 5 match set: St. Michael-Albertville vs Alexandria in the 8AAA finals. When the fifth set goes extra points and the state tournament on the line, it doesn't get any more thrilling.

Best 4 match set: Shakopee vs Eastview in the AAA state finals. The margin that separated these two teams was two points.

Best 3 match set: Lakeville South vs Lakeville North. South's first win over older school North came in the 3AAA semis. Not only was it South's first win, but it was the first time they took a set off North in the school's history.

OUT OF 3
best 3 match: Woodbury vs Andover in the Eastview tournament.

best 2 match: Eden Prairie vs Alexandria in the finals of the EP tournament. Five points separated the two.

BIGGEST RIP OFF: I showed up early to watch White Bear Lake and Fridley and they were already starting the 4th set. The reason the contest started early---no conflict with the "powder puff" Fridley game during homecoming week.

BEST IN SEASON TOURNAMENT
Apple Valley's Eagle Invitational (Sept 19/20).....Two state champs played in that event. 5 state tourney entrants...10 teams in section finals.

BEST TEAM NOT TO MAKE THE STATE: Chaska

BEST TEAM I DIDN'T SEE: According to the MaxPreps poll---Jackson County Central #11. The next team was #34 Mabel-Canton. In other words 32/33 or .970.

BEST FBSO SEASON: Shakopee .614 (in the games I watched)

BEST FBSO GAME: Eagan .867 vs New Prague

MOST POINTS: STMA 113 vs Alexandria 8AAA Final

MOST POINTS & LOST: Alexandria 108 vs STMA 8AAA Final; STMA 108 vs Andover .

MOST EARNED POINTS: STMA 85 vs Alex

MOST EXCITED UNCLE: Windom's MaKenzie Lovell's uncle during the State A Final with Bethlehem Academy. (Once upon a time I coached MaKenzie's mother (Shelley) in Ellsworth, MN & Lance Becker sat with me during the Windom contests at the state tournament).

BEST FRESHMAN: Leigh Pudwill of Centennial. A 6-1 rangy OH with pop.

And now...the drum roll please....the big three awards. Team, Coach and Player

TEAM: Shakopee. They were the only repeat champion from 2007. The Sabers needed to replace all state setter Jessica Menden (TCU) and strong OH hitter Maggie Geske (SW MN State). They did that with a modified 6-2 and all players did their jobs. Shakopee is fundamentally sound and know where to be on the floor. Yes Ashley Wittman is a strong player, but the other Sabers got it done. A team is only as strong as their weakest link and there were no weak links on the Sabers.

COACH: Matt Busch, Shakopee. See above. It is hard to repeat. It is hard to maintain focus. Shakopee got the job done.

PLAYER: Ashley Wittman, Shakopee. This is not a surprise. Wittman was player of the week four times this fall (Weeks 1, 4, 12, 13). The Future Gopher can put the ball down. She averaged 8.5 points per set this fall. This makes a clean sweep for the Sabers.

BIG 10: #12 Minnesota beat Iowa in five. The Hawkeyes had a 4 point margin for the night. The Gophers led 2-1. Hailey Cowles (Eden Prairie) had 19 points for the Gophers.
A few years ago Iowa came to Minnesota on Thanksgiving Wednesday. There were NO time outs (none, nada, zero) taken in the Gophers sweep that night. The only match where I never saw a time out.

Indiana is at Michigan and Ohio State.

Michigan State hosts Iowa and Minnesota.

Illinois faces Wisconsin and Northwestern.

BIG 12: Iowa State swept #13 Kansas State with a margin of 23 points. Diane Kieger (Mounds View) had 8.5 points for ISU.

METRO ATLANTIC: Siena is headed to the NCAA tournament after their win over Fairfield. April London (Woodbury) had 35 assists and 6.5 points for the Saints.

SEC: #14 Florida beat South Carolina in five with a margin of 11 points. USC led 2-1. Bridget Denson-Dorman (Hopkins) had 39 assists and 2 points for USC.

Northeastern swept Hofstra in the Colonial semifinals with a margin of 15 points on Sunday. Leah Neubeck (Hopkins) had 16 digs and 1 point for the Huskies.
Delaware beat Northeastern in the championship in five sets with a margin of 13 points on Monday. NE led 2-1. Neubeck had 24 digs for the Huskies.
Neubeck was named to the all tournament team.

NCAA SELECTION SHOW
The 2008 NCAA Selection Show will air on ESPNU and ESPNews on Sunday, November 30th starting at 9 pm. The Gopher Volleyball team and coaching staff will be hosting an NCAA Selection Show viewing party in the Sports Pavilion Clubroom.

Concordia St. Paul's Maggie McNamara (Zumbrota-Mazeppa) has been named the Daktronics North Central Player of the year.

Minnesota beat Ohio State in four with a margin of 14 points on Senior Day. Kyla Roehrig, Katie Vatterrodt, Rachel Hartmann and Kelly Schmidt all played their last time at home (maybe). Lauren Gibbemeyer (Cretin-Derham Hall) had 22 points for the Gophers. Katie Dull had 19.5 points for the Buckeyes. Susan Halverson (Apple Valley) had 4 digs for OSU.

Brook Dieter has a grade 3 sprain in her left ankle and the hope is she will return in a couple of weeks.

MORE D1 RESULTS
SUMMIT: The volleyball team is the first team from North Dakota State that has advanced to the NCAA tournament. From the Fargo Forum. The Forum also has list five reasons for the Bisons' success.

METRO ATLANTIC: Fairfield advanced to the finals of the MAAC tournament with a 4 set win over Iona with a margin of 25 points. Karlie Urbaniak (Mabel-Canton) had 11.5 points for the Stags. Urbaniak made the MAAC second team.

MID AMERICAN: Ohio is another team that made the NCAA Tournament as they won the Mid American Tournament with a four set win over Western Michigan. WMU had a 1 point advantage for the day. Amanda Andersen (Centennial) had 9 points for Ohio.

SEC: South Carolina swept Mississippi State with a margin of 43 points. Bridget Denson-Dorman (Hopkins) had 28 assists and 5 points for USC.

SOUTHERN: Furman upset the College of Charleston in five to win the Southern Conference Title. It was Furman's third five setter of the weekend. CofC had a 1 points advantage for the day. Pamela Gehrke (Eastview) had 2 digs for Furman.

#1 Concordia St. Paul swept UM Duluth with a margin of 14 points. CSP won its 4th Central Region Championship title. It also was career win #200 for head coach Brady Starkey. CSP travels to New Haven in the Elite Eight quarterfinals. Maria Steinhagen (Alexandria) had 16 points for CSP. Sarah Wyffels (Marshall) had 10.5 points for UMD.

MOUNTAIN WEST: Utah beat Colorado State in four with a margin of 4 points in the Mountain West Championship. Tessa Nelson (Tracy-Milroy-Balaton) had 11 points for CSU.

SOUTHERN: Furman upset Samford in five with a margin of 10 points in the Southern Tournament. Samford led 2-1. Pamela Gehrke (Eastview) had 2 points and 2 digs for Furman.

SUMMIT: North Dakota State is NCAA Tournament bound with a 3-1 win over Oral Roberts with a margin of 17 points. It was NDSU's 19th straight win. Brooke VandenBergh (DePere, WI) had 16 points for NDSU. Kristin Hille (Sauk Rapids) was named tourney MVP. VandenBergh, and Chrissy Knuth (Champlin Park) made the all tournament team.

WEST COAST: Portland beat Gonzaga in four with a margin of 10 points. Jennifer Sheedy (Totino-Grace) had 8.5 points for Portland and she reached the 1000 kill mark for her career.

NCCAA
#3 seed Northwestern, MN beat #1 Trinity Christian in five to make NCCAA tournament. NW's margin was 10 points. Kathryne Engel (West Lutheran) and Steph Koth (Hibbing) had 18 points each for NW.

Wisconsin took out their frustration on losing to the Gophers on Friday. The Badgers swept Iowa with a margin of 20 points. Audra Jeffers had 11 points for Wisconsin. Nikki Klingsporn (Tartan) had 18 assists for the Badgers .Aimee Huffman had 11.5 points for Iowa.

ACC: North Carolina swept Wake Forest with a margin of 16 points. Brianna Eskola (Columbia Heights) had 17 digs for UNC.

ATLANTIC 10: George Washington took the A10 East title with a four set win over Temple. The margin was 10 points. Abby Syverson (Mpls SW) had 11.5 points for GW.
GW will be the third seed in the upcoming A10 tournament.

BIG EAST: Cincinnati swept Rutgers with a margin of 24 points. The Bearcats won a share of the Big East title. Kelsey Brandl (Lakeville North) had 1 point for the Bearcats.
Pittsburgh swept Marquette with a margin of 20 points. Tiara Russell (Osseo) and Leslie Bielski (Chaska) had 7 and 6 points respectively for Marquette.

MOUNTAIN WEST: Colorado State swept UNLV with a margin of 18 points. Tessa Nelson (Tracy-Milroy-Balaton) had 6 points for CSU.

PAC 10: Washington State beat Oregon State in five. OSU had a one point advantage on the day. OSU led 2-1. It was WSU first conference win of the year. Emily Rooney (Red Wing) had 12.5 points for WSU.

SEC: Tennessee beat South Carolina in five with a margin of 15 points. USC led 2-1. Bridget Denson-Dorman (Hopkins) had 54 assists and 7.5 points for USC.

SOUTHERN: Furman swept Davidson with a margin of 21 points. Pamela Gehrke (Eastview) had 2 digs and 1 point for Furman. Brittany Narr (Minnehaha) assisted on a block for 0.5 points.

SUMMIT: South Dakota State swept Centenary with a margin of 27 points. Mackenzie Angner (Cincinnati St. Ursula) had 16 points for SDSU. Molly Janssen (Mounds View) and Mary Sanderfoot (Rochester Century) had 3 and 1 point for the Jackrabbits.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Ridgewater finished second in the NJCAA D3 National Tournament. The Warriors lost to Brookhaven in the championship in a sweep with a margin of 16 points. Ridgewater has been to the finals the last four years. From the West Central Tribune.

Weekly Review #14: All Stars
The weekly reviews aren't quite done yet. The State tournament has come and gone. The All Star games this week gave another shot to the class of 2009 (and some 2010s) a chance to put the uniform on one more time. The All Star Series sponsored by the Ninhams and All Star Athletic Promotions put on two All star events this weekend. I attended the South Central All Star Series at Bloomington Jefferson yesterday. It gives me the chance to see some players I don't get a chance to see during the year. I did see 8 of the players during the course of out & abouts during the fall, but 19 were new.

All Star teams by their nature are artificial creations. Fans around me were wondering how teams were going to celebrate after a point. Once the ball was put in play all teams made plays. Rallies lasted a bit longer than some high school action.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
This has to go to Navy the team that won the South Central event yesterday. Navy had a strong passing game with Kirstee Rotty and Grace Sanders patrolling the back court. Up front Navy had three players with double digit kills. What set them apart from the other two teams was their serving. Navy had 19 aces to 9 and 4 for Blue and Scarlet. Navy was most adept at FBSO with a .667 %. The other two teams were under .500. Navy led at the key break points 21/26 times on the day (.808).

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
This goes to outside hitter Nikki Meinz of Navy (Sauk Rapids-Rice). Meinz is not very big on the outside (5-5) put she packed a wallop of a hit, had good spring in her jump, and had a deadly serve.

Navy Wins South Central Series

SOUTH CENTRAL ALL STAR SERIES
Team 3 Navy beat both team 1 Scarlet and team 2 Blue to take the South Central All Star Series at Bloomington Jefferson this afternoon.

First off each team played each other two games to 25 and one game to 15 no matter what.

The event started with Blue beating Scarlet 25-20, 25-15, 15-7.
The Blues broke free from a 13 all tie with 11-3 run putting them at the brink at 24-16. It did take the Blues five set points to finish the scarlets in set one. Jessica Clark led the charge for the Blues in set one with six points.
Blue used the win in the first set as a springboard to an 8-3 run to start the second set. However the Scarlets roared back with a 9-4 run to tie the set at 12. Once again the Blues finished strong with a 13-3 run. The Blues were able to get four straight side outs on the Scarlets while knocking out points on their last five serves. Ari Mewhorter had four kills in this set including point 25.
There was no doubt on the next set with the Blues building an 8-2 lead after a six point run on Clark's serve. Maddi Nerenhausen led the way in this set with four kills.

In the second series Navy beat Scarlet, but the reds did get a game off the dark blues 25-22, 22-25, 15-6.
The Scarlets had to play right away again this time against the Navy. This set was fairly tight throughout. The leads never got larger than three points. Navy led 8-5 when Scarlet took their first lead after a five point run 10-8. Navy reclaimed the lead at 17-16 after a four point run. There were three ties after that, the last at 20 all. But the Navy was able to get the last six FBSO, two of which were missed serves. Nikki Meinz had 7.5 points for Navy including the last two points---a side out kill and then an ace to close the set.
Navy led after four 3+ runs to start the second set 14-7, but then the Scarlets rose up. A 8-1 run put them right back in the hunt as the set was tied at 16. Navy inched ahead 22-21. The Scarlets closed out with the last four points. Rebekah Aase had a block, one of four in the set, and then put down a kill before Megan Schroeder ended the set on a kill.
The final 15 point set was the only one that mattered. Navy took control 5-1 after a four point run off Dana Boerboom's serve. The key factor in this set was the FBSO game with Navy getting 5/6, Scarlet's FBSO game was only 2/6. Besides that Navy "earned" 10 points to Scarlets 4 in the final set.

In the final series in what proved to be the championship, it was Navy over Blue 25-19, 25-18, 13-15.
Navy didn't take control of the first set until they had a five point run, four on Libby Augedahl's serve. They wouldn't relinquish the lead after that. Blue cut the margin to 21-19. A dump by Elizabeth Benson got the ball back to Navy and Benson served out with the final point coming on a Blue hitting error.
Navy had a five point run to take them to a 15-7 lead in the second set. Danika Stindtman had four straight kills for Navy. Blue did rush back into the contest with a six point run, five of them off Alyssa Bryngelson's serve. Navy contributed to that run with three hitting errors. Navy had three straight FBSO after that incident, while scoring on two of their last three serves. Augedahl had 7 of the earned Navy points in the set.
The final set went to Blue, but Navy led 10-7. A missed serve put the ball back in Blue's hands. The Blues finished with a 8-3 run. Nerenhausen had three kills in the last segment. The set was tied at 13 when Clark had a kill followed by a kill by Bryngelson.

NJCAA D3 NATIONAL TOURNAMENT
Ridgewater advanced to the finals of the NJCAA D3 tournament in Rochester. The Warriors beat Nassau CC in four with a margin of 32 points. Later they swept Harper College of Illinois with a margin of 16 points. This is the fourth year in a row Ridgewater has made the finals. From the West Central Tribune.

Hibbing won in the quarters, but fell in the semis to Brookhaven, TX.

Augustana beat Wayne State, Nebraska in five with a margin of 12 points. WSN led 2-1. Ellen Andrews (Bancroft-Rosalie, Nebraska) had 19.5 points for the Vikings. Mindy Moody (Sioux City Heelan) had 18.5 points for WSN.

MSU Mankato swept MSU Moorhead with a margin of 20 points. It was the Mavericks 5th straight win. Kimber Kuhl (Chaska) had 13.5 points for Mankato. Cathy Turner (New Prague) had 11 points for Moorhead. From the Mankato Free Press.

#8 SW MN State swept UM Crookston with a margin of 19 points. Kasey Loeslie (Tracy-Milroy-Balaton) had 13.5 points for SW. Amber Meyer (Paxton, NE) had 11 points for UMC.

Winona State beat Upper Iowa in four with a margin of 10 points. Jenna Padley (Lodi, WI) had 14 points for WSU. Beth Deutmeyer (Dyersville Beckman, IA) had 18 points for UIU.

The Northern Sun released their all Conference list prior to the end of the season.
Concordia St. Paul's Maggie McNamara (Zumbrota-Mazeppa) was named player of the year.
Concordia St. Paul's Mary Slinger (Bethlehem Academy) was named libero of the year.
SW MN State's Devin Diedrich (Braham) was named freshman of the year.

Today is the first day of college signing day for volleyball.

WEEKLY REVIEW #13: State Tournament Recap
I have decompressed and digested the three days of volleyball action at the Xcel Center.

ATMOSPHERE
PARKING: too high as always. $12 seems $6 too high.

FOOD: Speaking of high $7 for a pizza in a box is also too high. They did add another pepperoni to the solo pepperoni from last year. I never even attempted to purchase beverages which were obscenely high. The hot dogs were $3.50. Nothing screamed value.

BEST SEATS: I don't understand why the end zone seats aren't used more often. They offer the best views. Press row had a big old ref stand in the way blocking 1/5 of the court. Thursday I sat along press row, but soon moved out on Friday.

BEST BAND: Ada-Borup takes the band to a different place. When the band director starts belting out a rap on Ada you know it is not your mother's band anymore.

BEST CHANT RESPONSE: From Andover to Shakopee's "Why so quiet"... "because were losing"

GAMES & PLAYERS
all are on the matches I saw.
BEST SET: 1st set of the A championship between Windom vs Bethlehem Academy.

BEST FINAL: Shakopee vs Eastview

BEST COMEBACK: Windom vs BA in the first set of the A championship.

WHAT WAS HE WATCHING?: The no call in the Eastview vs STMA third set when Eastview blocked the ball and the refs didn't see it resulting in a four contact call.

EVEN/ODD JINX: BA----They have won state titles in the odd years of 2003, 05, and 07. They have finished 2nd in the even years of 2004, 06 and now 08. Next year pencil BA in as champs if the Even/Odd pattern holds.

NON SEED ADVANCING: Andover toppled #4 Wayzata in the AAA quarters with a five set win.

BEST OUT OF SYSTEM: Ada-Borup pushed BA to five in the semis with scrappy play and getting points on kills out of system.

BEST SERVING: Windom racked up 38 aces in 12 sets---an average of 3.17 per set. Marshall had 2.7.

BEST HITTING: Shakopee's lowest total was .248. The Sabers were north of .300 in the other two contests.

BEST ONE-TWO PUNCH: Jordan's CD connection---Brittany Chambers and Leah Dietel.

BEST SISTERHOOD: Ysker Sisters of Windom

BEST REVENGE: Windom over BA in the A Championship. In the other two rematches from last year Marshall and Shakopee won in three.

BEST SHORTS: Windom's coaching staff. Snow was falling on Saturday, but they maintained the shorts.

TEAM OF THE WEEK:
You might get tired of seeing it but it has to be Shakopee. The Sabers were 9-1 for the week in sets. Windom was 9-3 as was Jordan. The Sabers have been number one most of the season at AAA and for good reason. They do their jobs. Contrary to popular belief they are not a one person team. The final three earned points vs Eastview came from players other than Ashley Wittman. In fact of the last 11 points only one came off a Wittman kill. In order for Wittman to get her swing going their needs to be a pass. Mollie Geske, Libero and the other Sabers deliver. The setters need to get their jobs done. After that the players cover. Here is the scary thought for the rest of AAA---The Sabers start no seniors. They have a chance for the first "Three-peat" in the three class system. (Central Christian won one title in the two class and then two more in the new three class in A--1998-99-2000). It would be the first "three-peat" in the 25 point era. This is Shakopee's second honor this year. They won in week 1.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
This again is no mystery--Ashley Wittman. She brought the Thunder to the Lightning on Saturday and has been bringing the Thunder all season to everyone. Wittman had 77 kills for the week and hit .449. It would be a mistake to think Wittman's skills are exclusively on the offensive end. She also led her team in digs with 18 vs Rochester Mayo and 28 vs Eastview. Wittman is aware of what is happening. This is Wittman's fourth honor this year. She won in week 1, 4, and 12.

The Gophers had two wins this weekend at home vs two top 20 teams. From the MN Daily.

ATLANTIC 10: George Washington beat Fordham in five with a margin of 3 points. GW led 2-0. Abby Syverson (Mpls SW) had 12.5 points for GW.

BIG EAST: Seton Hall beat Marquette in five with a margin of 11 points. Leslie Bielski (Chaska) and Tiara Russell (Osseo) had 15 and 6 points for Marquette.

CUSA: Southern Mississippi beat Marshall in four with a margin of 7 points. Megan Carlson (Andover) had 17 digs for Marshall.

PAC 10: #10 USC swept Washington State with a margin of 13 points. Emily Rooney (Red Wing) had 6.5 points for WSU.

HIGH SCHOOL REPORTS
Scott county won two state championships yesterday with Jordan and Shakopee taking titles. Another thing they had in common was they were both #1 seeds that won it all.

Windom broke the #1 seed streak by taking the title in A.

AAA

Jordan reclaimed the AA title after a year away from the throne. The Jaguars prevented Marshall from a back to back experience. From the StarTribune and Marshall Independent.

Windom beat one of their own. Bethlehem Academy coach Franz Boelter is a Windom grad (1970). The Eagles came up aces against the Cards in the four set win with a 15-7 advantage. SHAKOPEE sabers 3, EASTVIEW lightning 1
(26-24, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22)

Shakopee won their back to back AAA championship with a four set win over Eastview. These two teams opened the season and closed the season. This was the third time these two teams faced each other. Every time the Sabers came out on top. Tonight was no different. The key part in this match came in the first set. Shakopee had a 23-19 advantage, but Eastview struck for five straight points to stand on the edge with a 24-23 lead. Shakopee held off one set point with a kill by Ashley Wittman, one of her 32 on the night, and then Wittman served up the final two points.

Jordan returns to the top of the AA heap, and prevented a Marshall back to back repeat with a four set win over Jordan. In the battle of the cats it was Jordan that proved they had nine lives as they survived two set points in the first set as they rallied to beat the Tigers 26-24. Marshall led 24-22. The dynamic duo of Brittany Chambers and Leah Dietel had 36 and 27 points in the win for Jordan.

In a championship rematch of the 2007 Class A Championship it was #2 seed Windom in a reversal topping Bethlehem Academy in four. Windom came up aces against the Cards with 15 in the match. Another factor in the Windom victories was the quick starts and strong finishes in sets one and two, while in set four they used a strong middle. Another odd fact---BA outscored Windom 90-89.

PAC 10: #10 UCLA swept Washington State with a margin of 27 points. Emily Rooney (Red Wing) had 6 points for WSU.

SEC: South Carolina beat Auburn in four with a margin of 11 points. Bridget Denson-Dorman (Hopkins) had 41 assists and 4.5 points for USC.

SOUTHERN: The College of Charleston beat Davidson in four with a margin of 19 points. Brittany Narr (Minnehaha) played but did not chart for Davidson.

SUMMIT: North Dakota State swept IPFW with a margin of 25 points. It was the Bison's 14th straight win. Jennifer Lopez (DGF) had a triple double with 13.5 points (10 kills), 19 assists, and 11 digs.
South Dakota State swept Oakland with a margin of 22 points. Kelli Fiegen (Parkston, SD) had 14.5 points for the Jackrabbits.

Former Gopher Nicole Branagh and Tyra Turner advanced to the semifinals of the Phuket Thailand FIVB tournament.

BIG 10 FRIDAY RESULTS
#17 Minnesota swept #18 Purdue with a margin of 18 points. Lauren Gibbemeyer (Cretin-Derham Hall) had 13 points for the Gophers. Stephanie Lynch had 15 points for Purdue.

Wisconsin beat Ohio State in four. OSU actually had the point advantage with 2 points. Brittney Dolgner had 19.5 points for Wisconsin. Nikki Klingsporn (Tartan) had 26 assists and 3 points for the Badgers. Katie Dull had 24.5 points for OSU. Susan Halverson (Apple Valley) had 7 digs for the Buckeyes.

#16 Illinois beat Iowa in four with a margin of 14 points. Laura DeBruhler had 24.5 points for Illinois. Megan Schipper had 17 points for Iowa.

#20 Michigan swept Northwestern with a margin of 15 points. Megan Bower had 15 points for the Wolverines. Brittani Gray had 12.5 points for NW. Naomi Johnson (Bloomington Kennedy) added 5.5 for the Wildcats.

#1 Penn State swept Michigan State with a margin of 26 points. The Nittany Lions have tied an NCAA record for consecutive match wins with 52. Megan Hodge had 16 points for PSU. Becca Zlabis, Vineece Verdun, and Kyndra Abron each had 6 points for MSU.

Some Stewartville students (no volleyball players) were cited at the Embassy Suites hotel. The juveniles were cited for "alcohol consumption, after teens apparently punched a hole in the wall of a hotel room, jumped out of a balcony window, disturbed other guests, and grew "violent" with Embassy Suites hotel staff." SEMIFINAL FRIDAY
The Minnesota State volleyball tournament wrapped up today with the top two seeds in each class advancing to the finals. However it took five sets in three of the contests.

Again with the multitude of contests if you want to see the official stats go to the MSHSL site.

AAA
The day started with #1 Shakopee sweeping unranked Andover in a rematch of last year's championship. However it was a bit tighter than people may have thought. The first two sets were tight with Andover serving at set point. Elizabeth Benusa got the kill as the Sabers dodged a bullet. Ashley Wittman then had a kill to put Shakopee at set point. Andover held off with a Nicole Husfeldt kill. The set ended with two Wittman kills 27-25. The second set was tied up at 22 when Megan Westlund dumped the ball for a key side out. Shakopee didn't give it back with a block by Jean Theis and another set ending kill by Wittman. Andover wasn't the same after that. In the third set Shakopee led 5-0 and 10-2 early setting the tone for the rest of the way.

The Sabers will face Eastview. The Lightning beat St. Michael-Albertville for the second time this season and it too was a sweep. In set one Eastview trailed 19-18 when they went on a five point run that put them in the driver's seat. In that run of five Ashley Murtha had three kills. A STMA time out at 22-19 failed to halt the Lightning. The first set ended on a missed Knight serve. Set two was another tight contest with STMA leading 20-17. Eastview finished with an 8-2 run. STMA took a time out at 20 all which gave the ball back to the Knights, and again trailing 23-21. In the 8-1 run Lauren Grant had three kills including point 25. Just like in the Shakopee/Andover contest the momentum drained from STMA. Eastview got off to a 5-0 lead and lead throughout. STMA closed to 14-10 but an 8 point run cemented the result. Karlee Lursen finished the match with a kill.

Oddly enough both teams opened the season---I had an out & about on that. Shakopee won 3-1 back in August.

A
Next on the menu of contests were the A semifinals. On Thursday all As were sweeps. Today all the semis were fives. Both #1 Bethlehem Academy and #2 Windom won in five, but both were pushed hard.

In a sense this was a match up between two state champions and their initials are just the reverse of each other. Bethlehem Academy is the defending 2007 Volleyball champ. #4 Ada-Borup is the 2008 Class A girls basketball champs, many who play both sports. AB was a scrappy, gritty bunch that were able to make plays out of system. The Cougars took the first set from the Cards 25-20. The took advantage of a six point run when they trailed 14-10. After that they didn't trail. FBA missed a serve to start the run. AB led 11-8 in the second set when FBA went on an 11-4 run to take a 19-15 lead. The Cards maintained that margin the rest of the way for a 25-21 victory to tie things up. In a similar scenario in set three, AB led 9-6 when FBA went to work. First off they had four straight FBSO to stifle any potential Cougar rally. Second they went on an 8-1 run and 16-3 run to cement their win. The Cougars refused to quit. They started set four with a 6-0 lead with Katy Ness providing half the points. AB stretched that margin to 17-8. BA had to play catch up and closed to 21-18, but a missed serve doomed their chances to overtake the #4 seed. In fact a missed serve ended the set. BA put an end to the momentum shift with the first four points of set five. Holly Hafemeyer was a force at the net with four of the fist six points and 8 points overall in set five. AB got as close as three. Hafemeyer ended the match with a kill.

Windom faced a similar situation in their semifinal with #3 BBE. They took the first set with a strong finish. BBE led 18-16 when Windom finished with a 9-2 run. Megan Ysker had four of the points for the Eagles in the closing run. In set two BBE started out flaming hot with the first four points and a 12-2 lead. Heidi Lensing had five points at the start of those 12 for the Jaguars. Windom scrapped back to close to 23-22 with a 8-2 run, but a hitting error ended their momentum. Lensing finished set two with a kill. It was the Eagle's turn for a quick 7-1 start in set three. BBE did bounce back to close to 9-7, but another five point run later made it 21-11 after Allison Nau had three aces in that burst. It was all about the starts. In set four BBE raced to a 6-1 and 13-4 lead. Emily Roelike had five of the last six points in the 13-4 run. Fittingly Roelike ended set four with a kill. Start fast, win the contest. Windom raced to a 5-1 lead to start set five. Courtney Ysker had three aces in that burst. Windom finished strong with a 7-1 run. Again the Younger Ysker was instrumental with four of the seven points, this time all on kills.

This sets up a rematch of the 2007 A championship.

AA
We weren't done with the five sets yet. #1 Jordan survived an upset bid by #4 Hibbing. Hibbing led 18-17 in set one when the Jaguars finished with an 8-3 run. Brittany Chambers five kills in the 8 point run. Hibbing tried to stop the Jordan express with a time out at 21-19 and 24-21. Hibbing led 16-9 in set two after a nine point run. The Bluejackets pushed their lead out to 21-13. The Jags then went on a 9-1 run again with BC knocking down four kills. Jordan had a 8-3 run to take a 20-13 lead. The Jags pulled out to a 5-1 lead to start the fourth set, but Hibbing went on a 5-0 run to take a 6-5 lead. There were 7 lead changes and five ties in this nailbiting set, the last at 23 after a tip kill by Chambers. Jordan had the ball, but a hitting error gave it back to Hibbing. Melissa Nyberg had a block to force set five. Jordan used a 7-1 run to put distance between themselves and Hibbing at 12-6. Again Chambers had four points in the burst. Hibbing wasn't through with a 6-1 run to close to 13-12. Kate Lange had three of the points for Hibbing. A block by Leah Dietel gave the ball back to Jordan. The match ended on a Hibbing hitting error.

The final match was a rematch of the last year's AA championship. This time Marshall left no doubt in the outcome with a sweep of St. Cloud Cathedral. The Tigers had a run of six early in the first set and then had another four point burst to go up 17-11. Eventually Marshall led 24-17, but they needed five set points before Danielle Gladis finished with a kill. Cathedral led 13-12 in set two when the Tigers roared back with a 7-2 run to lead 19-15. SCC cut the margin to 22-20. Hope Weilage wrapped up the second set with a kill. Reverting back to the first two matches of the day the team that won the first two sets had an easier time in the third as the energy drained for the team trailing. Marshall 9-4 and 14-5 as the Crusaders didn't have a strong response to the relentless diversified attack. Five Tigers had more that four kills.

Jordan beat Marshall in the Lakeville North tournament at the start of October.

STATE TOURNAMENT RECAP
Today I was at the state tournament for six contests. I will not be doing an out & about on each of them. There are stats and play by plays from the Minnesota State High School League Website. That would be a good first source.

AAA
It gets to be a long day. The first contest started at 9 am. I started with the only upset of the day and the only fiver of the day. Unseeded and second place finisher in 2007 Andover beat #4 Wayzata in five. The Huskies took all the odd sets. The point margin was zero.
This sets up a rematch of last year's AAA championship with #1 Shakopee who swept Rochester Mayo with a margin 37 points.
After that I watched #2 Eastview vs Osseo. The Lightning swept the Orioles with a margin of 29 points. It was the first time in the tournament for Eastview and it was the first time back to the Xcel Center since 2001.
#3 St. Michael-Albertville stopped the upset minded Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders in four with a margin of 18 points.

AA
All the seeded teams advanced with only one contest going more than three sets.
I started with two top 10 teams #1 seed Jordan vs Delano. The Jaguars swept the Tigers with a margin of 23 points.
At the same time #4 Hibbing swept Wadena-Deer Creek with a margin of 31 points.
The tightest contest was between #3 St. Cloud Cathedral beating Stewartville in four with a margin of four points. The Crusaders will get a rematch of the 2007 Championship with #2 Marshall who swept Concordia with a margin of 36 points.

Each seeded team won in a sweep in Class A. I watched the top two teams. #1 Bethlehem Academy swept Deer River with a margin of 13 points. #2 Windom swept Lake of the Woods with a margin of 25 points.
In the two contest I didn't watch #4 Ada-Borup swept SW Christian with a margin of 27 points. #3 Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa swept Martin County West with a margin of 13 points.
The rematch between BA and Windom is on track for Saturday.

Players are divided up on three courts one hour into the event. Generally speaking, we have one court of 12-13 year olds, one court of 14-16 year olds and one court of advanced girls, boys and adults.
Why is this clinic the best? The "over-correction" teaching method combined with "Survivor" has the advantage of skill development while you are playing. These advanced skills are downloaded into the motor memory through massive repetition while the player is competing in a non-intimidating environment.

Minnesota falls to #17 in the latest D1 poll. Colorado State is lucky #13. Cincinnati is receiving votes.

BIG TEN: Penn State is still perfect, which I guess doesn't count as news. The Big 10 has released their weekly report. PSU is tops in hitting % with .395 and also #1 in opponents hitting % with .070. Minnesota is #5 and #2 respectively. PSU has four of the top five hitters by % in the Big 10.

It is deja vu all over again for the Big 10 weekly winners. Both Ashley Benson of Indiana and Ashley Edinger of Illinois were the hitter and defensive player of the week last week.

Iowa hosts #16 Illinois and #18 Purdue this weekend.

The Badgers Morgan Salow and Allison Wack play Bingo.

MISSOURI VALLEY: Creighton hosts Indiana State and Illinois State.

PAC 10: Washington State hosts #9 UCLA and #10 USC this weekend.

WEEKLY REVIEW #12: Ticket Punching
Last week 24 teams punched tickets to St. Paul. After weeks of only a few games viewed (only two); last week was a cornucopia of events. Everywhere I turned there were good players, good teams, and good matches. I sampled a few matches in each class, but most of the week was spent in AAA.
Most of the teams I saw this week I saw earlier in the year. There were a few new teams I saw---Meadow Creek and Concordia Roseville.

UPSETS
The week started with the civil war stunner with Lakeville South taking down Lakeville North. It was the first time the Southerners not only beat North, but it was the first time they took a set off the Panthers. That wasn't the end of the upsets. I got to see one more with Concordia Roseville sweeping home team Minnehaha in the 4AA championship.
In AAA being the #1 seed was no bonus. Owatonna, Woodbury, Blaine and Grand Rapids all were stopped short of state. Rochester Mayo returns to state after a 34 year absence, and it is only the city of Rochester's second time in the big show. Mayo was the #3 seed, but they weren't the lowest seed. That honor went to #5 seed Cretin-Derham Hall in section 4. They won twice in fivers with conference rivals #1 Woodbury and #2 Stillwater.
Two Northwest Suburban #2 seeds made the show---last year's runner up Andover is back and Osseo has returned for the first time since 2001.

Upsets were less frequent in AA and A. In fact all 8 #1s (there are two in each section) made the State tournament.

POWER PLAYERS VS BALANCE
There were some interesting match ups and style differences. Early in the week versatility and balance beat the power individual. Toward the end of the week power individuals were in the

These two players didn't have another teammate reach double digit points on that night.

The difference with these teams---they had at least one other player that had double digit points.

STATE WORTHY & SEEDS
There were two contests in particular that deserved to be held in St. Paul---the 8AAA and 2AAA championships. Both contests kept fans riveted. STMA and Alex played to the maximum five and then extra points on top of that. Shakopee and Chaska played to a full gym of rabid fans. The sets weren't decided until late in the contest. It is too bad these contests weren't showcased at St. Paul. I would like to see the entire state seeded. That leads to seeding the current state tournament. This is the first year the state is seeded. Unfortunately the seeds are restricted to one through four. For some reason is is OK to give a team a #12 or #8 seed (depending on what section you are in), but heaven forbid a state team is saddled with an 8 seed. Think of the children....their whole season will be sham as they have to live with the stigma of the 8. Think of all the therapy those players will need with that slap at their dreams and self esteem. No one wants their fee-wings hurt. Do the right thing and seed full 1-8 or only seed the sections 1-4 too. Don't be a stinking hypocrite.

PROGRAMS
Some sections do a great job with programs for the sections. Sections 3, 4, and 5 all had programs with photos. Those programs are a great keepsake. The other sections I went to this week were simple sheets of paper with both rosters. As a historian and pack rat it is great to go down in my archives and look back on the old programs from the old days. They have more meaning. I hope more sections upgrade to full programs in the future.
As a further note....there were no problems or issues at any of the events, but at Minnetonka the staff went out of their way to set up a special table. So thanks Minnetonka for the help.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
This was a tough call. Obviously winning a section had to be a requirement. St. Michael-Albertville had a hard hill to climb. Alexandria had the momentum and energy leading 2-1. Things didn't look rosy for STMA. The Knights broke free from a 20 all tie in set four with the last five points. In the fifth set the Knights survived a 14-10 meltdown that saw Alexandria tie the game up. STMA then held off one game point to finish with the last three points and punch a ticket to state. STMA showed grit, determination, and resiliency to get there.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ashley Wittman of Shakopee takes the honor for the third time this season. Wittman, in the wins over Chaska, had 9 or more points in each of the set wins. When the Sabers lost, Wittman had 7 points. At 6-1 and with her leaping ability she can put the down quickly and hard. Wittman had 11 FBSO kills on the night and 11 of the 20 points late in each set (from points 20-25).

Here is the rest of the team---there are two teams and probably could be more with middles getting the short shift due to space requirements.

CUSA: UAB beat Marshall in four with a margin of 11 points. Megan Carlson (Andover) had 27 digs and 1 point for Marshall.

PAC 10: #5 Stanford swept Washington State with a margin of 22 points. Emily Rooney (Red Wing) had 8.5 points for WSU.

SEC: South Carolina beat Mississippi in four with a margin of 11 points. Bridget Denson-Dorman (Hopkins) had 50 assists and 11 digs and 4.5 points for USC.

SOUTHERN: Davidson swept Samford with a margin of 14 points. Brittany Narr (Minnehaha) did not score for Davidson.
The College of Charletson beat Furman in five with a margin of 5 points. Pamela Gehrke (Eastview) had 2 digs for Furman.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE

BIG 10 RESULTS
Indiana upset #13 Minnesota in five with a margin of 3 points. The Hoosiers have won four in a row. Erica Short had 25.5 points for Indiana. Brook Dieter (Bloomington Kennedy had 20.5 points for the Gophers.

#1 Penn State beat Iowa in a sweep with a margin of 31 points. It was Penn State's 1000th win for the program. Only five other schools have 1000+ wins. Nicole Fawcett had 17.5 points for PSU. Megan Schipper had 11.5 points for the Hawkeyes.

#20 Purdue beat #18 Michigan in five with a margin of 12 points. Stephanie Lynch had 25.5 points for Purdue. The Wolverines led 2-0. Beth Karpiak had 15.5 points for Michigan.

Northwestern swept Michigan State with a margin of 11 points. Sabel Moffett and Brittani Gray had 11 points for NW. Naomi Johnson (Bloomington Kennedy) added 4.5 points for the Wildcats. Mischelle Nelson had 9 points for MSU.

Illinois beat Ohio State in four. Michelle Bartsch had 18.5 points for Illinois. Katie Dull had 19.5 points for OSU. Susan Halverson (Apple Valley) had 5 digs and 1 point for the Buckeyes.

SECTION 1
Stewartville beat Caledonia in five with a margin of 2 points. Julie Rainey had 17 kills and 32 digs for the Tigers. From the Winona Daily News.

SECTION 2
Jordan won the rubber match with LeSueur-Henderson in a sweep with a margin of 25 points. During the year the two teams split their matches. LSH led 24-22 in set one before Jordan rallied for a 28-26 victory. Brittany Chambers had a 20/20 night with 27 kills and 22 digs. From the Jordan News and Mankato Free Press.

St. Cloud Cathedral, last years AA runner up, beat Rocori in four with a margin of 6 points. From the St. Cloud Times.

Hibbing topped Esko in a three set sweep with a margin of 25 points. The jump serve was a big weapon for the Bluejackets. From the Duluth News Tribune.

#2 South Wadena-Deer Creek beat #1 North East Grand Forks in four with a margin of 19 points. WDC's Brigetta Berg had 32 kills and 27 digs. From the Grand Forks Herald.

AAA PLAYOFF RESULTS
SECTION 1
For the first time in 34 years a Rochester team is headed to the state tournament. #3 seed Rochester Mayo upset #1 seed Owatonna in five. Mayo is the only Rochester team to get to the state volleyball tournament and that was in 1974. Owatonna had a 12 point advantage on the night. The match also marked the end of a 19 year coaching career for the Huskies coach Rod Nakagaki. He had 604 career wins Owatonna led 2-1. From the Owatonna People's Press.

SECTION 2
I reported on the Shakopee four set win over Chaska last night. Here is the report in the StarTribune.

SECTION 3
There was going to be a first time entrant to the state tournament in this section and Lightning struck as #1 seed Eastview is headed to State with a four set win over Lakeville South. Also in the StarTribune report.

SECTION 5
#2 seed Osseo upset #1 Blaine in four. There was a late report on that last night.

OSSEO orioles 3, BLAINE bengals 1

I did not attend this contest, but here is the report---

#2 seed Osseo upset #1 seed Blaine (and #8 in the coaches poll) in four. The Bengals beat the Orioles during the season in a sweep. Osseo took sets one, two and four. Blaine won the third 25-23. Osseo won the fourth 25-23. Blaine led 21-20 when Osseo took a time out in set four. The Orioles finished with a 5-2 run. The final point came on a tip kill by Rachel Wiinanen. Karen Hiltunen had 9 kills to lead the Orioles and Rachel Pekarek had 19 digs. This is the first time Osseo has been to the state tournament since 2001. Blaine had been to the state tournament the past two seasons.

SHAKOPEE sabers 3, CHASKA hawks 1
(25-21, 25-27, 25-22, 25-21)

In a battle of heavyweights it was defending AAA champ and current #1 team Shakopee stopping Chaska (AAA champ in 2005 and 2006) in four. As fitting a championship match this contest was memorable with both teams taking the best hits and continuing action. Sets lasted 35 minutes. The two met earlier in the year in the Apple Valley tournament with the Sabers winning 2-0. Ashley Wittman had 37 points for the Sabers. Shakopee is probably the odds on favorite to be the number one seed in the upcoming state tournament. The Sabers are 28-2. Chaska finished 24-5.

Again the energy was crackling as the stands were full. Fans were on the edge of their seats in each set. Each set was in doubt with margins two points of less when the score was north of 20. In three of those occasions the Sabers finished with either a 3-1 run or 3-0 run. Chaska held off set point with the Sabers for their only victory in set two. The odd fact in this contest---only two Shakopee rotations scored more than they allowed. Chaska had three rotations above .500. But Shakopee's second rotation---Mollie Geske's serve----racked up 30% of the Shakopee points on the night. The best Chaska rotation provided 21% of their points.

Shakopee broke free from an 8 all tie in the first set with a six point burst. Chaska took a time out trying to stop the momentum at 12-8, but Jean Theis added two kills after the break to make it 14-8. That was to be the Sabers biggest lead of the entire night. Chaska inched back into the contest with the help of the blocking game. Amanda Unze and Chelsie Stahl each had a block to cut the margin to 15-12. Neither team had a big run the rest of the way. Also neither team had a door slamming FBSO game. Chaska did have a string of four straight FBSO, but Shakopee found a way to get points on the next three serves as the race to 25 intensified. Chaska had two self inflicted errors for Saber points 21 and 22 which forced a Hawk time out 22-18. Unze delivered a side out block and then Bekah Saugen added a kill to cut the margin to 22-20. Ashley Wittman put down a kill and then finished the set with a FBSO kill. Wittman had 9 points in the first set. The odd thing was Chaska out "earned" Shakopee 17-15. The six point run, and the two points at 21/22 were key for the Sabers win in set one.

Chaska had strong starts in each of the remaining sets---none better than in set two with a five point run to lead 5-2. Stahl delivered two blocks in the run. Shakopee recovered and pulled ahead 10-9 after a three point run. Chaska had another three point run to take the lead 14-12. The Hawks didn't keep it long with three straight hitting errors. Side outs ruled the next five points. Chaska inched ahead at 18-17 after an overpass kill by Ellen Degler. Shakopee had their third three point run to go ahead 21-19. The Sabers were on the cusp of victory after a Wittman kill gave them a 24-23 lead. On set point the Sabers were in the net. It was Chaska's turn to have set point at 25-24 after a Shakopee time out. Wittman postponed the Hawks celebration to tie it at 25. Chaska got the side out with a Stahl kill. The second set ended on the second set point on Amanda Konetchy's kill.

Shakopee trailed 10-8 when they went on a 7 point run, 6 on Mollie Geske's serve. Wittman had four points in the run which Chaska tried to stop with a time out at 13-10. Chaska had a surge of their own with four straight points to close to 16-15. That forced a Saber time out. Chaska tied the game at 20 on an ace by Konetchy. Shakopee got a kill from Jean Theis for a side out. A Wittman kill forced a Chaska time out. Chaska did get a side out kill from Shelby Peterson to make it 22-21. Again Wittman knocked down two kills to put the Sabers at match point. The Hawks held for one point on a kill by Unze. Wittman again delivered the set ending kill. Again the key factors for the Sabers---a major run of 7 points and Wittman had 10 points.

It was Chaska enjoying their biggest lead of the night at 21-8 when Shakopee took a time out. Two side outs later Mollie Geske stepped to the service line and went to town. Shakopee went off on an 9 point run (including the side out kill by Wittman). That was the back breaker. A four point lead turned into to a five point deficit. Wittman had five of the points in that run. Chaska wasn't done yet. They scrambled back to trail 21-20 after a 5-2 run three kills by Peterson. That prompted a Saber time out. At the time Wittman was in the back row for the second of three cycles. The Sabers got breathing room with a side out kill by Mariah Monnens. Peterson delivered the last Hawk point and then Elizabeth Benusa and Wittman put down kills followed by a Benusa ace to punch their ticket to state. The Sabers have a chance to defend.

In all three Shakopee wins there was a common pattern----one run that went on longer than usual---6 to 9 points---and Wittman unleashed. In the Shakopee loss in the second set the runs were only the garden variety three, not the lengthy ones that made it hard for the Hawks to recover. Also Wittman only had 7 points in the second set compared to 9-10-11 in sets 1, 3, and 4.

CONCORDIA ROSEVILLE beacons 3, MINNEHAHA redhawks 0
(25-22, 25-13, 25-16)

Concordia Roseville got revenge for a regular season 4 set loss to TriMetro champ Minnehaha with a solid sweep of the host Redhawks. CR was the #2 seed in the East. This is the Beacons 10th trip to State, but the first since 2002. The whole match hinged on the first set. Concordia rallied for the win. After that the Beacons played with confidence and authority. The only time the Redhawks led after that was at 1-0 in the third set.

The Redhawks started off on the right note with four points with Katelyn Adams scoring two of the points on a block and kill. As quickly as MA led they put CR back in the contest with three straight hitting errors. MA went back in front 10-6 their last four point lead of the day. CR had a five point run starting with a missed MA serve followed by two Redhawk errors. CR led 12-11 when MA took their first time out. CR took a time out with MA up 17-16 after a three point run. Sarah Winter had two kills in the run. MA pushed their lead out to 21-19 after Winter's fifth kill of the set. After that CR closed hard with a 6-1 run. CR had two three point runs, both started on missed MA serves. Naomi Walther wrapped up the first set with a block, her 6th point of the first set.

That finished invigorated CR and took the spirit out of the hosts MA. CR raced to a 10-3 lead with two runs in the first three serves. MA took their first time out at 10-3. Lauren Koepke had three of the 10 points for the Beacons. Three of the Beacon points came on blocks. MA couldn't generate any offense off their serve. CR for the set had 11/12 FBSO. MA took their second time out at 19-10, but it didn't slow down the Beacons as they added two more points. CR increased their earned points from 13 to 18 in set two, while MA dropped two to 10.

MA opened the third set with the first point. Then the proverbial roof caved in. After a tip kill by Walther, Jenny Otte served up 10 straight points. MA took a time out at 7-1, but Otte served up four straight aces after the time out. MA was forced to take their second time out then at 11-1. MA did fight back with a four point run to close to 16-8. Three of the points came on CR errors. CR did take a time out at 16-7. The Beacons added to their totals at 21-10 after a run of three. MA had one last five point surge to close to 21-15. The Beacons closed with a 4-1 run to punch their ticket to state.

Southwest Christian of Chaska is headed to the state A tournament for the first time with a sweep of Meadow Creek. The Stars kept building strength as the day went on. Cassie Haag had 18 points to lead the Stars.

There must have been jitters early for both teams as both teams allowed runs on the first three serves. Meadow Creek ran off five straight to lead 5-3. That was to be the last time they scored on their serve in the first set. After that SWC put together 12 straight first ball side outs. Both teams traded 10 side outs. SWC missed three serves in that stretch. Haag started to heat up with two points, one on an overpass kill that forced MC to take their first time out trailing 13-10. At one stretch Haag had five of the eight Stars points. With nothing to show off the Saints serve it was hard to cut the margin. MC took their second time out trailing 22-15. The first set ended on a block by Angie Swanson.

SWC didn't quite have the same air tight FBSO game in the second set. MC had another good start with a run of four to lead 6-4. SWC used a five point run with Angie Swanson providing four straight points (five if you count the point right before the sequence). MC took a time out at 11-7. MC had one last thrust with a four point run to tie the contest at 12. Then SWC shut the door with four straight FBSO. SWC got Haag involved in a 10-2 run with six points. MC didn't help their cause with three straight missed serves including point 25.

MC changed their service order with the #4 spot becoming the #1 spot. MC was moving Tija Rudzitis away from Haag. It didn't faze SWC. They had their best start with an 8-2 run. That forced a MC time out. MC did close to 10-6, but again SWC had a door slamming FBSO game. They were 9/10 and .824 for the whole match. SWC had a six point run that took another MC time out at 15-6. For the third set MC earned only 5 points compared to 15 earned for SWC. The match ended on a Swanson kill and the Stars will be headed to State.

MIAC
Hamline beat Macalester in five with a margin of 14 points. Mac led 2-1. Amanda Booth (Champlin Park) had 18.5 points for the Pipers. Majra Mucic (St. Louis Park) also had 18.5 points for the Scots.

UMAC
Martin Luther beat Northland in four with a margin of 12 points. Northland's Melissa Anderson (Champlin Park) reached the 1000 career kill mark in the contest. She ended up with 18 points on the night. Amanda Polzin (Rhinelander, WI) had 11 points for ML.

UM Morris beat Crown in four with a margin of 16 points. Alison Pippo (Annandale) had 15.5 points for UMM. Laura Plowman (Minnetonka) had 17.5 points for Crown.

St. Scholastica beat Bethany Lutheran in four with a margin of 12 points. Amy Thompson (Onamia) had 24 points for CSS. Eva Voss (MN Valley Lutheran) had 16.5 points for BL.

NORTHERN SUN
#23 Wayne State, Nebraska swept St. Cloud State with a margin of 24 points. It was WSN coach Scott Kneifl's 100 career win. Mindy Moody (Sioux City Heelan) had 16 points for WSN. Kayla Tschida (Upsala) had 9 points for SCSU.

Minnesota State Moorhead swept Northern State with a margin of 17 points. Kelci Guenther (Williston, ND) had 12 points for the Dragons. Kayla Ysteboe (Grand Forks Red River) had 18 points for Northern.

Minnesota State Mankato swept Bemidji State with a margin of 16 points. Ashley Nachreiner (Round Rock, TX) had 20.5 points for the Mavericks. Heather Sampson (Champlin Park) and Nicole Olson (Lake of the Woods) had 12 points each for the Beavers.

UM Crookston beat Mary in five with a margin of 2 points. UMC led 2-0. UMC's Jacklyn Slepicka (Crystal Lake, IL) reached the 1000 career dig mark.

Winona State beat Upper Iowa in four with a margin of 17 points. Kerry Daly (Woodbury) had 14 points for WS. Shea Meyerman (Camanche, IA) had 12.5 points for UIU.

#17 UM Duluth upset #3 SW MN State in a sweep. The margin was 12 points. Katie Gangelhoff (South St. Paul) became the all time leader in assists at UMD with 5598 in her career. Sarah Wyffels (Marshall) had 15.5 points for UMD. Laura Hegerle (Kasson-Mantorville) had 13.5 points for the Mustangs.

#1 Concordia St. Paul beat #22 Augustana in four with a margin of 4 points. Ellie Duffy (Totino-Grace) had 19.5 points for CSP. Ellen Andrews (Bancroft-Rosalie, Nebraska) had 19 points for Augustana.
