WINDOM eagles 3, BETHLEHEM ACADEMY cardinals 1
(25-22, 25-20, 14-25, 25-23)
In a championship rematch of the 2007 Class A Championship it was #2 seed Windom in a reversal topping Bethlehem Academy in four. Windom came up aces against the Cards with 15 in the match. Another factor in the Windom victories was the quick starts and strong finishes in sets one and two, while in set four they used a strong middle. Another odd fact---BA outscored Windom 90-89.

BETHLEHEM ACADEMY cardinals 3
MARSHALL tigers 1
(13-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-20)
In a cross class champion clash it was the smaller A school, and host and defending champ Faribault Bethlehem Academy defeating defending AA champ Marshall 3-1. BA is currently #1 in A, Marshall is #2 in AA now. Middle Holly Hafemeyer of BA had 26 points on the night with 19 kills, 6 blocks and one ace. Each of the wins ended on a either a kill or block by Hafemeyer.
It was the first time I had been to BA, and for those that haven't been there, it is a throw back facility with plenty of character. The seats are permanent with a stage opposite. The name of the facility is the Van Orsow Auditorium. The lighting was good and both teams drew well.
This was the second game of the young year for Marshall, and the first for BA. Both times the Tigers were on the road against ranked Cardinals. On Tuesday, Marshall beat Alexandria. Tonight these Cardinals went through their first game problems and then buckled down. The entire night featured great defense, and long heart stopping rallies. Most of all it featured the long, tall presence of Hafemeyer.
In game one however it was Marshall putting the clamps down on BA. The Tigers side out game was almost air tight at 7/9. The Tigers serving game was a big difference in the first game. Marshall had five aces in game one. FBA took their first time out after two straight aces by Kayla Wallerich. After the time out BA went on a 6-1 run to close to 11-10. That was as close as it was going to get in game one. The Tigers led 16-13 when they got a bump kill for a side out and then ran the table on Rachel Westby's serve. Westby served 8 straight points.
After game one BA shook off the loss and came out smoking. Hafemeyer opened game two with three kills in the first four points as the Cards led 4-0. They never trailed in game two. BA had four runs in this game, three when Hafemeyer was patrolling the front line. The highlight of the night came Marshall's 18th point. The rally lasted quite some time with both sides making saves, digs, and coming back with challenging attacks. The point ended on a BA hitting error, but the crowd acknowledged the performance by both teams. Another BA error forced a time out. Stephanie Meschke got the key side out to bump the Cardinal lead back to 22-19. The rest of the game both teams traded side outs. Hafemeyer got a FBSO kill for point 25.
Marshall raced out to a 5-1 lead with Tina Tauer knocking down two straight kills. BA Franz Boelter didn't waste any time using his first time out. Hafemeyer got the side out kill. Marshall maintained their advantage out to 15-14. However two plays previously a Tiger miscommunication stopped a rally to make it 14-13. If Marshall got the point it would have been 15-12. After that miscue the door was open for BA and they seized the opportunity with an 8-2 run. Marshall was forced to use their second time out trailing 19-16. After the break Kari Anne Nass served up an ace. Marshall had one more run in them with four straight points to close to 22-21. Dani Beekman started the run with two straight kills. BA took their second time out and once again that turned the trick. Both teams traded side outs with Hafemeyer using her reach for a block on point 25.
In game four both teams never got too far from the other. Marshall did have a four point run to claim a 10-8 lead with Westby spearheading a 6-2 run with four kills. After that BA slammed the door on Marshall's serving game with 6/7 FBSO to close out the game. Marshall finished the contest with a FBSO of 2/6. BA took their first lead at 16-15 on a Marshall tip hitting error. The game was tied at 19 all when a hitting error gave the ball back to the Cardinals. Another Tiger hitting error forced Marshall to take a time out at 21-19. After that all the BA points were scored by Hafemeyer. Marshall took another time out at 23-10 but there was no stopping Hafemeyer. The Tigers did get a side out but Hafemeyer ended the night with her 19th kill and her 10th point in game four.
