Osseo won the fourth 25-23. Blaine led 21-20 when Osseo took a time out in set four. The Orioles finished with a 5-2 run. The final point came on a tip kill by Rachel Wiinanen. Karen Hiltunen had 9 kills to lead the Orioles and Rachel Pekarek had 19 digs. This is the first time Osseo has been to the state tournament since 2001. 5AAA PLAYOFFS
semifinals
OSSEO orioles 3, CENTENNIAL cougars 1
(26-28, 28-26, 25-15, 25-14)
#2 seed Osseo survived two set points in set two and rode that momentum to beat #3 seed Centennial in the next sets. Centennial's "earned" points dropped from 19.5 in the first two sets to 7 in the next two as Osseo's defense tightened up at the net. Osseo had 52 earned points, while getting 52 points on Centennial errors. In fact the Cougars had 53 earned points, one more that the Orioles. Osseo however had fewer errors on the night.
The night can be divided into two portions---back and forth, and going away. Centennial had five runs in the first set including the first two. Both times it was only a three point run and Osseo never trailed by more than three. Osseo had a run of four to retake the lead at 17-15 which forced the first Centennial time out. After the break the Cougars ran off three straight to take an 18-17 lead. All three points came from Micah Sater kills. Karen Hiltunen ended that with a side out kill and then started serving. The Orioles added three more points for a 21-18 lead. The last two points came on Osseo blocks. Centennial had their 4th run to tie it up at 22. That forced an Osseo time out. After that the game moved to a side out game with 8 straight side outs. Osseo had two set points in the sequence, but Leigh Pudwill got point 24 for Centennial and Sater had point 25 to tie. The Cougars had their fifth run of the first set to close out the win. Pudwill had the kill to get the 27-26 advantage and then an Osseo hitting error ended the first set.
Set two was similiar but reversed. Osseo had the early advantage. A four point run gave the Orioles a 10-5 lead. Centennial answered right away with their own four point run. Two serves later Centennial had another four point run to take a 14-12 lead. An Osseo time out ended that and started an Oriole three point run. Two straight Centennial hitting errors were part of the equation. Six side outs later Osseo still led 18-17. Centennial moved forward on their third and final run of the set. Osseo returned the favor with three straight of their own to retake the lead 21-20. Centennial edged out ahead 23-22 when Osseo took a time out. Two Centennial errors later Osseo led 24-23 forcing the Cougars second time out. A deep serve and then a block put Centennial on the cusp of a two set margin, but Rachel Pekarek got the key side out. Centennial's Krista Stoltz got a side out kill to give Centennial their second match point. A deep hitting error on a slide turned the ball over to Osseo. Hiltunen slammed home an overpass kill and then Sathre served up an ace to ice the second set.
That loss took a lot of steam out of the Cougars. The next set Centennial only had four earned points. In fact in the first 10 Osseo points only 3 were earned. In the first 7 Centennial points zero were earned. Osseo cleaned up their mistakes the rest of the set allowing only four more. Meanwhile Centennial gave away 7 more points. Sathre had four points in the third set.
Centennial had one last gasp as they led 7-3 in the fourth set. That forced an Oriole time out and the Orange and Black outscored Centennial the rest of the night 22-7. The key service came on Amanda Hoefling's serve as Osseo had an 8 point run to lead 16-9. Centennial had five errors in that sequence. Centennial narrowed the gap to 16-12 after three straight kills, two by Sater. But missed serves torpedoed any momentum that was building. Rachel Wiinanen didn't give the ball back until Osseo added six more points. Osseo led 24-13 when a missed serve gave it back to Centennial. Sathre ended the night with a kill, her 11th on the night.

OSSEO orioles 3, TOTINO-GRACE eagles 0
(25-18, 25-10, 28-26)
In a match up between two of last year's 5AAA semifinalists, Osseo spoiled the home debut of new Totino-Grace coach Leah Welch 3-0. The Orioles used their serving game with 15 aces on the night to help chalk up the victory. Two Rachels Pekarek and Wiinanen each had five aces on the night. Pekarek and Karen Hiltunen each had 8 kills to lead the Orioles in that department. Lisa Beacher had 10 kills for TG.
The Orioles's service game broke open early in the first game with Rachel Pekarek serving up six straight points with four aces. That early burst forced the Eagles to call a time out at 8-2. Pekarek dropped another ace after the break. TG had a mini run of their own with four straight started with two kills by Beacher. However TG failed to get the FBSO on the next two Osseo servers and that opened the door for a 8-1 run. Rachel Wiinanen served up four (with two aces). The Eagles took a time out to stop the run at 21-10. After that time out TG did get three straight FBSO against Osseo, and did squeeze points off three of their four servers, but the hole was too big. Hiltunen ended game one with a kill. Pekarek had 6 points in game one.
Osseo closed the door in the second game with five straight FBSO and 8/9 for the game. On the other hand Osseo was able to break free again after not scoring on their first three serves. Amanda Hoefling, Hiltunen and Wiinanen provided 4, 4, and 5 straight when they served, Wiinanen providing two more aces. When the dust had settled Osseo had a 20-7 lead. Hiltunen provided five points in game two.
It appeared it was going to be more of the same in game three with Osseo racing off with a 7-0 lead. Pekarek had three kills in the fast start. Eventually the Orioles stretched that lead out to 18-9 when TG turned the momentum around. It started off with three straight points by Beacher, one on a side out kill followed by two aces. The Osseo side out game that was solid in game two had holes late in game three. TG had a 15-5 run and found themselves up 24-23 for their first lead in game three. Of the 15 TG points seven were via Osseo passing/hitting errors. TG had a hitting error, but Beacher put down a kill to give the Eagles another crack at 25-24. This time it was a service error that foiled the Eagles victory plans. Wiinanen then gave the Orioles the advantage with her fifth ace of the night. Beacher answered with a kill to tie it at 26. Two TG errors ended the night, the last coming on a foot fault.

5AAA SEMIFINALS
BLAINE bengals 3, OSSEO orioles 0
(25-23, 25-14, 25-15)
Blaine broke free from a tight contest with Osseo with a 11-1 run in game two led by future Gopher Jessica Granquist's five kills in the stretch. Granquist had 15 kills on the night. Both Granquist and Kreklow had 17 total points on the night.
An extremely competitive game one saw Blaine break free from a 20 all tie with a run of three. First Tracie Gillund had a kill, followed by a block by Granquist and an ace by Kreklow. Osseo tried to stem the tied with time outs at 22-20 and 23-20 and did get the side out after the ace. It looked like the game was headed to extra points as Osseo rallied for two points on a Blaine hitting error, and then an ace by Brianna Olson, but her next serve was narrowly wide and game one went to the Bengals 25-23.
Blaine didn't wait until 20 all to start accelerating in game two. The broke free from an 11 all tie. First they got the ball back on a Kreklow side out kill. Kreklow then served up four points for a 16-11 lead forcing Osseo to use a time out. The Blaine first ball side out game was cooking as they closed out with six straight FBSO. Unable to generate any points off their own serve, Osseo had a tough time. The Libero #31 (not in the program) served up five straight to make it 22-12----a 11-1 run. Granquist had four straight kills from points 19-22. Game two ended on Brittney Barren's kill.
That loss seemed to take the spirit out of Osseo and rev up Blaine's motor. The Bengals opened with a 9-0 run and led 13-3 after three Oriole servers. Kreklow was the first Blaine server and tallied four aces in her 8 point serving run. Osseo did manage to get some points off of Rachel Wiinanen's serve to close to 14-8, but and overpass kill by Barren ended the run. Again Blaine slammed the door with their fbso game closing with four straight. On the night Blaine was at .694 in fbso%. The Bengals next task is to take on the hot and upset minded Maple Grove Crimson on Saturday at Irondale.

(22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-23)
In a battle of unbeaten Northwest Suburban teams it was Centennial prevailing after losing the first game in a four game match in Osseo. Both teams stayed within shouting distance. Both teams delivered in the side out game with both teams above .518. Topping the charts tonight was Centennial's Becka Meiser with 15 kills.
There were seven ties to start game two. Centennial broke through with a three point run to make it 13-11. Osseo was forced to use a time out at this juncture. The game hung in this zone until Melanie Schmidt's serve for Centennial. She served up three more points (Osseo tried to slow the momentum to no avail at 20-16) to make it 22-16. The Orioles did get a side out, but
Centennial broke a 13 all tie with five straight points, four on Brittany Wilson's serve to make it 18-13. Osseo took a time out, but Wilson added her second ace after their break. In fact it was the third Centennial ace stretching back to a 8-1 run. Osseo closed to 19-16 after a Centennial hitting error forcing the Cougars to burn a time out. Soon after the game went into sideout mode for six straight balls. Osseo took their second time out at 23-18. Rachel Pekarek nailed a kill for the side out. Osseo hung on to close to 24-21 which led to another chat by Centennial. After the break Pekarek had a hitting error to end the third game 25-21.
Of note: The Father of Oriole Lindsey Sathre, MH, saw his last game this year. He leaves soon for Iraq.

Hutch, Osseo, and DeLaSalle Win
#5 posting 8.28.2007
your daily dose of girls volleyball news & information
TUESDAY NIGHT RESULTS
Hutchinson opened with a sweep over New Ulm. From the Hutchinson Leader.
Osseo beat Meadow Creek 3-1 in a cross class game. Osseo lost game one 23-25, then swept the rest. Game 2 was fairly tight, while games 3, and 4 were more comfortable wins for the Orioles.
DeLaSalle also won 3-1 over Mpls Henry. Henry took the first game 25-18 only trailing at 1-0. In game two DLS broke it open on a four point service run by Tess Melby to make it 19-11. Game three was nip and tuck up to an 19-17 lead after a DLS sideout. Henry never got the ball back as #15 served up six straight points. That momentum carried over into game four with a quick 7-1 lea by DLS. So over the course of two games DLS outscored Henry 14-1. It was difficult to play out of the hole and DLS went on to take game four 25-15. Kiah Hanssen-Kilpatrick had seven kills and five aces to lead Henry.
