The Maple Grove Crimson swept Irondale in a section 5AAA match up tonight. Both teams were in Maroon jerseys, but that is where the similarities ended. For the first time this year one team led the entire game. There were no ties. MG almost doubled up on the earned points with a 44-23 advantage. Leading the way for the Crimson tonight was Kelsey Jacobs with 15 points, 14 on kills.

With my practice getting done late, my ability to get to games are limited to the neighborhood. I entered on the first serve of the game. Luckily I was able to get all the action on paper. Right from the start MG established their dominance and Jacobs put the hammer down for the first two points. Irondale took their first time out at 10-5. By that time all six MG kills came from the left side. MG had their biggest lead in game one at 15-7. After that Irondale went on a 4-1 run which forced the only MG time out of the night. MG missed two serves in that mini Knight run. Irondale wasn't done with their rally. They had another 6-1 run later to close to 21-20. Haley Eagon had three kills for Irondale in that burst. Just as Jacobs started the set, she finished it. Jacobs had three kills in the last four point run by MG.

Set one was the tightest contest. After that Maple Grove took advantage of Irondale hitting errors and had five runs in set two. Irondale quickly took a time out at 7-1 after four straight Knight hitting errors. In the first set MG had four players with one kill, with the two lefts handling 14 of the 16. In the second set MG had six players with one kill, but the kill numbers dropped to 10.

The third set mirrored the second. MG jumped out to a 3-0 lead with Jacobs, once again getting things going with a kill. In a five point run to make it 10-4, MG had three tip kills. MG eventually stretched the lead out to 22-10. Irondale had a late burst of five to close to 22-15. MG had a trio of hitting errors in that late run. In the end the hole was too deep and the Crimson is now 4-1 on the season.

Out & About: Maple Grove/Totino-Grace

5AAA SEMIFINALS
MAPLE GROVE crimson 3, TOTINO-GRACE eagles 1
(25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18)

#7 Maple Grove pulled a Halloween trick on Totino-Grace with a four game win in the 5AAA semifinals. It is the second straight upset for MG. The Crimson upset #2 Centennial in the quarters. They will try for the trifecta in the finals. The top hitters both wore #12: Kelsey Jacobs led MG with 14 kills. Totino-Grace's Ellie Duffy pounded out 20 kills.

One of the big differences was the points on errors. Totino-Grace gift wrapped 36 points for MG while MG gave away 23 points on errors.

In game one MG took control right from the start with three straight points, 2 on TG hitting errors. The Crimson built that lead out to 9-3 after two kills by Kelsey Jacobs. TG had an uphill climb and came within one at 15-14, but never could manage to tie the game up, much less get over the hill. A kill by Erikka Korpi ended game one. Jacobs had a hand in 7 of the MG points in this game with two blocks and five kills.

In game two MG led 16-15 when TG took a time out. After that break TG got the side out on a kill by Lisa Beacher and then ran off six more points on Margo Rhody's serve. MG had to use two time outs in order to stop the run, one at 18-16, the last at 22-16. They did get the side out on a Korpi kill, but Ellie Duffy pounded home two kills to close game two out. Jacobs had 7 kills and one ace in this game.

MG, much like in game one, raced off with a 5-1 and 9-3 lead early. The serving game was working with three aces and keeping TG from clean flow on offense. Jacobs had three kills in the first portion of this game. Just like in game one, TG kept creeping back. They closed to 16-15 when MG took a time out. That stopped the run. TG took time at 22-19 and that worked and 24-20, that time out didn't. A TG hitting error ended game three. Jacobs again had five points in game three to lead both squads.

The early momentum again was in MG's favor in game four with a 14-4 advantage. This time mighty mite Cate Cavanaugh was causing havoc for TG. The diminutive outside hitter had five kills in this game. MG led by as many as 21-9. TG did mount two runs to make the score look respectable, but it was too little too late. Cavanaugh ended the game with a kill. #7 MG had their second upset win in their bag and they are hunting for the third in the finals.
