COLLEGE REPORTS
BIG 10: Minnesota hosts #20 Michigan tonight and Ohio State on Sunday. Traffic may be an issue on University Avenue.
Two Indiana recruits are part of the Under Armour All American team (see previous post for that link).
ACC: North Carolina beat Miami, FL in four with a margin of 11 points. Brianna Eskola (Columbia Heights) had 32 digs for the Tar Heels.
CUSA: #10 seed Marshall swept #7 Southern Miss with a margin of 20 points in the first round of the CUSA tournament. Megan Carlson (Andover) had 13 points and 13 digs for Marshall.
METRO ATLANTIC: Fairfield's Karlie Urbaniak (Mabel-Canton) does a Q&A with the Rochester Post Bulletin.
MISSOURI VALLEY: Northern Iowa beat Drake in four with a margin of 9 points. Amy Sampson (Champlin Park) had 13.5 points for UNI.
MOUNTAIN WEST: BYU beat Colorado State in five with a margin of 3 points. BYU led 2-0. Tessa Nelson (Tracy-Milroy-Balaton) had 15 points for CSU.
SUMMIT: North Dakota State took five Summit honors including player of the year & freshman of the year Chrissy Knuth (Champlin Park). Kelly Lopez (DGF) was named defensive player of the year. Erich Hinterstocker was named coach of the year. Jennifer Lopez (DGF) made the Summit First Team. Brooke Vandenberg was named to the second team. Janna Deyle made the freshman team.
NDSU Recruiting coordinator Kari Thompson has a good eye for talent. She recruited four of the above players. From the Fargo Forum.

South Dakota State had Mackenzie Angner make the first team and Ellyce Youngren make the second and freshman teams.
SUN BELT: Western Kentucky swept Denver with a margin of 19 points in the Quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament. Kresson Vreeman (Central Christian) had 2 digs for Denver.

BIG 10 IN POLLS
In the CSTV/USA Today poll seven Big 10 teams either are ranked or are receiving votes: Defending NCAA champ Penn State is #1 with Wisconsin #13, Minnesota #16, Purdue #25.
Illinois, Michigan and Michigan State received votes.
TRANSFER
Sophomore Mara Hilgenberg has transferred from Indiana to Iowa.
MEDIA DAY
The Gophers had media day yesterday.
SCRIMMAGE
Iowa will hold an intrasquad scrimmage tomorrow.
FEATURES
Aimee Huffman is featured in the 24 Hawkeyes to watch series.
In two video features Badger player talk about Coach Pete Waite and then describe what they would do if they were coach Waite for a day.

Finkel Verbals, Summit League Picks

VERBAL
DS Maggie Finkel of Chaska has verballed Winona State.
Finkel played with Northern Lights 17-1s.
Finkel is the 14th player from the 2009 Minnesota class to verbal and the 4th headed to a D2 program.
POLL
The volleyball poll is out this week. The #1s haven't changed. BBE is #3 in A. From the West Central Tribune.
#1s: AAA Chaska; AA Jordan; A Bethlehem Academy.
PREVIEWS
HIGH SCHOOL: Red Wing will look to win their first Missota game in two years. From the Red Wing Republican Eagle.
D1: North Dakota State is picked for third in the Summit League. Oral Roberts is tabbed for first. South Dakota State, the defending champs, are picked for fifth. Former coach Andrew Palileo is now at Washington State and the roster has changed. The Jackrabbits are looking forward, not back. From KELO (with video).
Portland is 8th in the West Coast Conference. MB Jennifer Sheedy from Totino-Grace plays for the Pilots.

St. Benedict's volleyball team has been have caught Olympic fever according to Rajkowski's column in the St. Cloud Times.
The American men finished pool play undefeated with a sweep of Japan. The team is coached by Hugh McCutcheon, son in law of Todd Bachman who was murdered in Beijing.

PREVIEWS
NCAA
The NCAA has released 10 players to watch this fall. They also have 10 teams to watch.
BIG 10
The Big 10 has released their preseason predictions for team finishes and player awards.
Defending NCAA champ Penn State is the heavy favorite for first. Nicole Fawcett and Megan Hodge were unanimous All Big 10. PSU had five players make the 12 member team. Expectations are high for the Nittany Lions.
The Gophers are tabbed for second. Lauren Gibbemeyer (Cretin-Derham Hall) and Brook Dieter (Bloomington Kennedy) were named preseason All Big 10.
Wisconsin was named third. Brittney Dolgner was a unanimous preseason Big 10 choice too. In the Badger Countdown series the players talk about playing at the fieldhouse in front of the fans.
Purdue is picked for fourth.
Illinois is selected for fifth.
Michigan State is eighth.
New Ohio State coach Geoff Carlston does a Q&A. The Buckeyes are the 9th pick in the preseason poll.
BIG 12
Iowa State is picked for 6th in the Big 12.
COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Riverland is previewed in the Austin Post Herald.
RULE CHANGES

ATTENDANCE NUMBERS
Wisconsin was 3rd overall in D1 attendance with 4328 per match. If you look at Big 10 only matches the number shoots up to 5970.
In case you are wondering Minnesota was 4th at 2961 and Penn State 5th at 2832. Also from the Big 10 in the top 25: Purdue-12, Ohio State-20, Michigan State-23, Illinois-24.
Hawaii led the nation at 6452.
North Dakota State was 45th in D1 in the attendance race with an average of 852.
AWARDS & HONORS
Sophomore Emma Jaynes (Hibbing) has been named the College of St. Benedict's athlete of the year.

SIGNINGS
Here is the Gopher press release on the latest two signings--Jessica Granquist of Blaine and Pamela Luiz of Limeira, Brazil by way of Frank Phillips College (a 2 year school in Texas).
COACHING
Here is the official press release from South Dakota State on Andrew Palileo's resignation. He is leaving for Washington State. The Sioux Falls Argus Leader explains why Washington State is a good fit for Palileo.
Also Brian Lamppa is leaving the University of South Dakota. Assistant coach Kevin Marquis will be the interim coach.
Kingsland High School in Spring Valley, MN has a head volleyball coaching position open.
LAST WEEKEND
We posted this before, but now the Gophers have added a few more stats to last weekends 2-1 tournament experience down at Iowa State. Brook Dieter had 39 kills and Hailey Cowles 36 more.
Ohio State was 4-0 last weekend to win the Purdue tournament. They only lost one game as they swept three matches.
AROUND THE BIG 10
Indiana has been spending time bonding this spring.
Purdue will be involved with the Great Lakes Center /Sports Performance Collegiate Spring Tournament this weekend. BIG TEN
Purdue beat Ohio State in four. The result means that Minnesota is now tied for 6th place with four other schools.
The Minnesota Daily says the loss to Michigan put the Gophers further away from the NCAA tournament.
The Big 10 named their players of the week
Stephanie Lynch of Purdue was defensive player
Arielle Wilson of Penn State nabbed offensive honors.
Penn State is still #1 in the D1 poll by the AVCA. Wisconsin drops to 11. Minnesota would be 32 now.
OTHERS
Fairfield swept Manhattan. Karlie Urbaniak (Mabel-Canton) had 3 kills and Lauren Wagner (Cretin-Derham Hall) had one kill for Fairfield.
Creighton swept Evansville. Allie Oelke (Chaska) had 17 kills and 25 digs for Creighton. It was Oelke's 11th double double for the year.
UConn swept Syracuse. Bridget Denson-Dorman (Hopkins) had 58 assists for UConn.
Stony Brook beat New Hampshire in four.

D1 ACTION
BIG 10 PLAY
Illinois finished 2nd in the Dayton Flyer Classic sweeping IPFW and losing to the hosts in five. Laura DeBruhler and Vicki Brown made all tournament.
Indiana won twice on Saturday with wins over Northern Illinois in five and followed by a four game win over Western Illinois.
Iowa fell to #17 BYU in five in the Hawkeye Challenge.
Oregon State was the next victim for Michigan in a sweep in Hawaii.
Michigan State lost two more matches on Saturday. MSU lost a four gamer with Loyola Marymount and then were swept by St. John's.
Northwestern won the Chicago Challenge with a sweep over Illinois-Chicago. Courtnie Paulus was MVP of the Challenge and Lindsay Anderson and Kate Nobilio were on the all tournament team.
Ohio State won the Active Ankle tournament with a sweep over Maine, followed by a sweep over host Ball State.
#3 Penn State topped #4 Texas 3-1. No it is not deja vu, they played twice with the same result from Friday.
#13 Purdue split matches at the Duke Invitational. The Boilermakers swept East Carolina and then fell to the host #18 Duke squad in four.
#11 Wisconsin won their own Inn Towner tournament with a sweep of Gardner-Webb and another sweep of Syracuse. The Badgers' Jackie Simpson was named MVP. Brittney Dolgner, and Jocelyn Wack also made the all tournament team.

Gophers Sweep Notre Dame, More Big 10 Action

GOPHERS SWEEP NOTRE DAME
Minnesota won their season opener on the road with a narrow sweep over Notre Dame. The last two contests were 30-28. Freshman Brooke Dieter had 18 kills. Minnesota faces the alumni on Sunday at 1 pm at the Pavilion.
OTHER BIG 10 ACTION
Illinois beat Bowling Green 3-1 with freshman Laura DeBruhler putting down 28 kills. Illinois box score.
Indiana had an ordeal with their bus, and then had their match cancelled because of floods in the Midwest.
Iowa was hosting the Hawkeye challenge in Iowa City.
Michigan made some big noise by dropping #10 Hawaii in five in Honolulu.
#6 USC made sure there were no upsets in a sweep over Michigan State.
Northwestern moves to the championship of the Chicago Challenge with a sweep of Chicago Loyola.
#16 Ohio State swept SE Missouri State in the Ball State tournament.
In a battle of heavyweights #3 Penn State dropped #4 Texas in four.
Purdue topped Winthrop in four in the Duke Invitational.
Wisconsin swept sister school UW Milwaukee in the InnTowner Tournament.
