Weekly Review #7: The Fritz

WEEKLY REVIEW #7 : The Fritz

This week I was able to get to 6 and 1/4 games and I knocked off six teams on my "to see" list. Friday (as you know) was busy, but luckily it was all in the neighborhood. Dakota County held three power tournaments on Friday and Saturday and I touched base with each event. The problem at each and every one was with the scoreboard. At every venue there was at one point scoring differentials from what I had. It was so bad refs would have to come over to straighten out the mess. At Lakeville North in the Hibbing vs Wayzata contest Wayzata trailed 23-19 by my book (and in reality). However the scoreboard read 23-22. That was changed after a lengthy accounting.

I did get to see four D1 verballed players this week plus one headed to D2. Unfortunately, my schedule prevented me from seeing the championships in any of the Dakota Championships. My Saturdays should free up for the rest of the fall, but there are only two Saturday tournaments left and one of the weekends my team will be playing. The good news is next weekend, I should be able to catch all the action at Eastview.

Scoreboards weren't the only thing on the fritz this week. I traveled to Fridley for a rare Wednesday game. What was even rarer was a 5 pm start so they wouldn't interfere with the "powder puff" football game scheduled for 7 pm. That meant I only got to see the fourth game of the White Bear Lake vs Fridley match.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
Keeping in mind I did not see any of the championship teams over the weekend and I only pick teams I see the honor this week goes to #2AA Jordan. The Jaguars rallied from a 6 point deficit in set one and rallied again in set two from a three point deficit. The first set was the nail biter with ties right up to 23. The Jaguars closed out that scene and finished set two with a 10-4 run to take the game against #8AAA Blaine. The Jags first ball side out % was a healthy .625 vs the Bengals. Jordan then beat #3AA Marshall in the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual champs Lakeville North in three sets in the semis. Jordan finished third with a 2-0 win over Eastview with a 11 point margin.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brittany Chambers of Jordan is one of the most competitive players on the floor. She has a burning desire to succeed. She brings energy and power to the game. She provided the Jaguars with 19 points, or 8.5 per game, by far the highest on the week. She simply took over and refused to lose.

In order to make this team, I had to see the players this week.

RH Amanda King, Holy Angels
S Madeline Haben, Holy Angels
MH Kate Lange, Hibbing
MH Tia Gaffen, Wayzata
OH Brittany Chambers, Jordan
OH Leigh Pudwill, Centennial
L Kelsey Hennen, Minneota

Out & About: Belle Plaine/Hutchinson

#6 posting 10.4.2008
your daily dose of girls volleyball news & information

BURNSVILLE TOURNAMENT
3rd Division
BELLE PLAINE tigers 2, HUTCHINSON tigers 0
(25-21, 25-19)

In the battle of the Tigers it was BP in a sweep over Hutch. Today I continued to cross of teams on my "to see" list. The odd thing was both of these quality teams had two losses on the opening night of the Burnsville so they were in the third division on Saturday. Hutchinson has received votes in the AAA polls for most of this season and Belle Plaine is #8 in the latest AA poll. Another odd fact was that Hutch was all alone in warm ups. Apparently they were to face Warroad, but the northern team didn't show up until later. BP had a brief warm up to fill that spot.

In the first set it was Hutch holding the advantage early at 6-4 until a five point swing for BP put the smaller Tigers up 9-6. Three Hutch hitting errors were part of that run. Hutchinson turned right around with a 6-1 run to put the bigger Tigers up 12-10. Hutch maintained their lead up to 17-14 when BP started their rally with a six point run, five off of Chelsea Fogarty's serve. Becky Koepp was also a big factor in the late BP 11-4 run with four kills. Hutch did tighten the contest at 20-22. A side out kill by Laura Schultz stopped the Hutch mini momentum and kept BP on track.

BP used that late surge to full effect in the second set. The smaller Tigers started set two with 9/10 first ball side outs. and that helped push them out to a 21-11 lead. BP had all four of their three point plus runs in that early part of the contest. Hutch mounted a comeback of their own with a 8-2 run to close to 23-19. Of those 8 points, six came off of BP errors. Schultz put down a key side out kill for 24 and Sam Johnson ended the Battle of the Tigers with a kill.

APPLE VALLEY TOURNAMENT
Quarterfinals
MINNEOTA vikings 2, MOUNDS VIEW mustangs 0
(25-16, 25-14)

It was the smaller school topping the bigger school in the Apple Valley Tournament. Dakota County has three high powered tournaments today and tomorrow and this was the second tournament I touched tonight. In this case the smaller school is the higher rated school Minneota is 3 in class A. At the start of the first set it was the bigger school taking the lead at 5-1. That turned out to be the last MV lead. Minneota went on a six point run to take a 7-5 lead. Leah Fadness was at the service line for that run and contributed two aces. The Vikings had four runs in the first set. MV did close to 15-13, but Minneota finished with a 10-3 run.

In the second set Minneota led from start to finish. The Vikings' defense stopped the Mustangs with seven straight first ball side outs to start the second set. By the time MV scored off their serve Minneota led 14-6. A four point run by the Vikings put the score at 23-11. Minneota was all over the floor on the defensive end making the saves and plays, and covering the blocks. The contest ended on Ashlynn Muhl's kill.

Minneota's Leah Fadness led both teams with 7 points.

TODD BACHMAN TOURNAMENT
Lakeville North
First Round
HIBBING bluejackets 2, WAYZATA trojans 0
(25-16, 25-22)

#4AA Hibbing topped an injured Wayzata team. Toni Okuyemi, Wayzata's freshman middle went down early in the first set with the Bluejackets up 8-4. She did not return. Hibbing pushed their lead out to 11-5. Wayzata came back with a five point run of their own to close the margin to 11-10. The game then shifted to a nine straight side outs. Hibbing broke from that pattern with a run of five, four points on Kate Lange's serve. Hibbing closed the first set with another run of four points.

Wayzata bounced back in the second set with a 6-2 start. The Trojan's Tia Gaffen dominated at the start of the second set with four of the six points. Hibbing roared back with a seven point run with Jill Gandsey serve. She had two aces in the run. Wayzata used their first time out at 12-9 and second at 15-10. Hibbing led 19-14 when Wayzata started to close. Wayzata had 4/5 first ball side outs to close the game. Wayzata was able to cut the margin with a 5-2 run. Hibbing pushed out to 23-19 when the scoreboard, for some reason, added points to Wayzata's total, making the score 23-22. After a long discussion the score was corrected. Wayzata scored twice after that delay to make it 23-21. Three straight side outs finished the contest. Paige Hardy finished the game with a kill.

Kate Lange led Hibbing with 11.5 points. Tia Gaffen led Wayzata with 11 points.

TODD BACHMAN TOURNAMENT
LAKEVILLE NORTH first round
JORDAN jaguars 2, BLAINE bengals 0
(25-23, 25-18)

The #2AA Jordan Jaguars beat the bigger #8AAA Blaine Bengals in two sets. Jordan overcame a slow start in set one. Jordan took a time out at 6-3 trying to breathe life into their game. Blaine held a 15-9 advantage when Jordan went on a five point run, four off of Brittany Chambers serve. Chambers had three kills in that run. Jordan didn't take the lead until Leah Dietel's serve when the Jags were in the midst of a four point run. Jordan led 21-19 before an Ari Mewhorter side out kill for Blaine. Blaine had to use their second time out after Jordan led 23-21. The Bengals did tie it at 23 after that, but Chambers rose to the challenge with her 10th kill of the set to give the ball back. A Blaine hitting error finished off set one.

8 straight side outs started out set two. Blaine again took a lead, winning the race to 10. The Bengals biggest lead came at 13-10. That is when the Jordan went on an 8-1 run and they didn't look back. Blaine missed on three of their last four serves. Also Jordan closed with five straight side outs. Jordan led 21-17 when a three point run put them on the verge. Blaine sided out once more on a block, but the serving problem reared it's head again.

Brittany Chambers had 19 points for the Jaguars. Ari Mewhorter led Blaine with 9 points.

Out & About: White Bear Lake/Fridley

#5 posting 10.1.2008
your daily dose of girls volleyball news & information

WHITE BEAR LAKE bears 3
FRIDLEY tigers 1
(W, W, F, 25-19)

Unfortunately I thought this contest started at 7 pm. It didn't. It started at 5 pm, so when I arrived the fourth and what proved to be the final set was about to get under way. The game was moved up two hours so it wouldn't clash with the "powder puff" football game at Fridley. I didn't stay for that exhibition. As it was White Bear took the first two sets and the final in the win.

Fridley is one of the youngest teams around using five freshmen. Since I have no idea what transpired earlier I can only talk about the fourth set. Fridley fell behind early 10-4 when they took their first time out. Four of the Bear's points came on aces at that point. Another Bear four point burst took the score to 15-6 and a second Fridley time out. That was WBL's high water mark. After that Fridley battled back with their own four point run forcing a Bear time out at 16-11, The Tigers kept chipping and clawing back to get to trail by two at 21-19. A tip kill by Kelsey Bocklund put the ball back with WBL and the Bears never let go.

You can see the entire White Bear Lake vs Fridley photo gallery at kevinanderson.photostockplus.com.
