IOWA STATE cyclones 2, MINNESOTA gophers 1
25-30, 20-30, 27-30

Iowa State took the first series today at the Sports Pavillion 2-1, coming back for the last two wins after Minnesota took the first game. The 8 shirtless fans for ISU had more energy than the MN crowd and enjoyed the victory. As is the case in spring games MN experimented with line up combos, and serving orders. What was noticeable was the mistakes (5 service errors in the last game, hitting errors throughout the match) that permitted ISU to win. MN gave away 31 points on the day.

Minnesota took control eary in game one with a 3-1 after three straight kills, 2 by Kyla Roehrig, and one by Jessy Jones. Lauren Cummings provide ISU their first lead with three straight service points including one ace. With the side out the Gophers tied it. MN took a momentary lead at 12-11 after Katie Vatterrodt's serve. ISU had a service run of five on MN native Erin Boeve's (Hills-Beaver Creek) serve. The Gophers got the game knotted up at 20 after Jones serve. Kelly Roysland, serving for Rachelle Hagerty, provided three points to go up 24-22. The Cyclones narrowed it to 26-25 before a side out kill by Roehrig followed by Rachel Hartmann closing out the contest with three straight service points. Jones slammed home the overpass kill for point 30. Roehrig had six kills in this game, the most any player had in any one game this afternoon.

In this game MN experimented with Vatterrodt and Hagerty switching spots on the front line and in the service order. ISU really shut down the Gophers in game two with 13 straight side outs. Minnesota helped them out with four missed serves in the sequence. Iowa State used Kaylee Manns serve for three points early to give them a 9-4 cushion. They added a few points throughout to go up 20-12. Christine Tan was the first Gopher to serve more than once after a dual block by Jones and Hartmann for a point. Jones added a kill to make it 15-20. On Hartmann's serve the Gophers added two more points including an ace to make it 22-18, but that was as close as it was to be as Boeve put down a kill to take the ball back. That started an 8-2 run to close out the night. ISU won 30-20.

Minnesota went back to the original spots for Vatterrodt and Hagerty, but started off with Kyla Roehring's rotation in the first position. MN started off with six straight side outs and pushed the lead to 9-5 on Roehrig's serve. But that lead soon melted as the side out game stalled. Victoria Henson had two points to give ISU their first lead. Kelly Schmidt bot the block for the Gophers and the game was tied at 12. ISU held a +1 advantage in the next sequence until Amy Vos' serve. She delivered three points to put the score at 21-16. When the Gophers got the ball back they missed their second straight serve in a row. Hartmann aced ISU to make it 25-23, but her next serve ended up in the nets and then on Boeve's serve a Jones hitting error followed by a Hagerty carry put the Cyclones on the verge at 28-23. Vatterodt had two straight kills on a side out ball and then off Roehrig's serve. The ball changed sides twice and Jones served up an ace to give the Gopher faithful hope at 29-27, but her next serve was all net and ISU got away with a 30-27 win.

If you look at the rotations you see that when Roehrig is in the back row ISU scored 44 points. Obviously missing five serves in game three mattered. But hitting errors also took their toll, also the passing game had players off balance all day.
