SHAKOPEE sabers 3, EDEN PRAIRIE eagles 1
(23-25, 25-13, 25-22, 25-17)
2AAA is one of the toughest, if not the toughest sections in the state with four teams in the top 10 this week. Tonight's match was important, not only for the polls, but also for post season pairings. #2 Shakopee beat #9 Eden Prairie in a 2AAA match up tonight at EP. The game was delayed until 8:01 pm (official time) because of the Minnesota primary election. Ashley Wittman had another huge night with 40 points in the win for Shakopee--- 39 were kills.
Shakopee had to overcome a first game loss to get the win. The Sabers trailed 12-10 before erupting on a 10-2 run to lead 20-14. Wittman was already piling up the kills with 10 of the Shako points already. EP stopped a four point run with a time out. With the rotations, Wittman found her self the next server. With The cannon in the back row, Shakopee struggled to find their rhythm. They only scored two more points the rest of the way, while EP finished with a 9-1 run. Shakopee tried to stop the onslaught with a time out when they led 22-21. They did get a side out, but couldn't close the deal with Wittman in the back row.
In the second game the Sabers didn't have the same issues. The issue in this game was the lack of a FBSO game for EP. Shakopee had eight service chances and scored off six of them. Of those six they scored more than two points on four (the last server only had one point needed for 24 for the Sabers.) This was the biggest margin win for Shakopee and strangely enough the only game where Wittman had five kills.
The pendulum switched back to the Eagles. They had a 9-4 advantage after a 8-1 run. Katie Froehle had four kills in the streak. Once again Wittman had moved to the back row. EP scored four points on that opportunity. Shakopee did start a 7-2 run to take a 13-11 lead. EP did tie it at 13. Shakopee stretched the lead out to 19-15. EP got some momentum back, again when Wittman moved to the back line. The Eagles tied the game up at 20. The key break point in the match came on the next ball. EP pushed the ball into the net for a hard fought point, but that slight opportunity was all the Sabers needed. Wittman soon moved back to the front and she was important in getting quality points in the end.
Shakopee used the momentum to build a 5-0 lead to start the fourth game. A missed serve returned the ball back to EP. They put three more points on the board to trail 5-4. But Wittman was a whirlwind racking up six of the next eight Shakopee points. EP took a time out at 13-6 and regained their composure. Two EP runs later the contest was tied at 16. Shakopee did have two missed serves in the EP comeback. As you may have guessed the EP run started with Wittman in the back row. It continued for four more points as she moved into the front. The game was knotted up at 16 when a Wittman kill returned the ball to Shakopee. After that Shako finished with a 9-1 run with Wittman hammering home 7 kills.

EDEN PRAIRIE TOURNAMENT
Championship
EDEN PRAIRIE eagles 2, ALEXANDRIA cardinals 0
(25-22, 25-23)
#9AAA Eden Prairie won their own tournament with a narrow two game sweep over #10AAA Alexandria. Katie Froehle had 10 points, all on kills, to lead EP. Both games went down to the wire. The difference was EP made 8 fewer errors than Alex. The Cardinals actually earned three more points during the match, but the mistakes ate that advantage away.
If you look at the "race to" point totals below in game one you will see EP led at every break point, but Alex actually rose from the dead with a eight point run on Samantha Dale's serve after trailing 20-13. EP got the key side out on an Alex hitting error. But the Cards wasn't able to get the FBSO on the next two serves while EP did shut the door on Alex. With the game tied at 22 EP took the next three points, but they were gift wrapped because they were all Alex errors.
Alex took advantage of an early lead with the first three points coming on EP errors. EP did ramp up their FBSO game with 9/10 sequence. EP took their second lead at 18-17. The Eagles may have had a bigger lead, but they ended their own runs with three missed serves in four chances. The Cardinals regained the lead on a fake set by Katie Brown. Taylor Simpson got the side out on a quick kill. That started a four point run that put the Eagles in the driver's seat. EP again struggled from the serving line with two more missed serves. Alex closed to 23-22 after a Dale kill. Katie Froehle returned the ball back to EP with a sideout kill to put the Eagles on the verge at 24-22. Both teams traded side outs with Froehle finishing the day with a kill.

EDEN PRAIRIE TOURNAMENT
Semifinals
EDEN PRAIRIE eagles 2, MAYER LUTHERAN crusaders 0
(25-12, 25-14)
Eden Prairie advanced to their own tournament finals with a two game sweep over #6A Mayer Lutheran. Taylor Simpson had 8 points to lead EP.
The Eagles got the jump early with a 4-0 lead in game one. Three of the first four points were on ML errors. Add on that the EP side out game which checked in on game one with a .778 FBSO% plus only three EP errors and you come up with a EP victory. EP simply didn't make many mistakes. The Eagles had four runs in game one, all four points or greater. The Crusaders tried to stop the momentum at 11-5, and 19-11, but each time EP added to their totals. In the final EP four point run in game one ML had three errors.
Mayer Lutheran started off with the lead in game two. It was a fairly tight game at 7-6 when Katie Roehle put down a side out kill giving the ball to Hayley Buchanan. Buchanan then served up 8 straight points, four of which were aces. ML tried to halt the march at 10-7, but EP marched on to 15-7 lead. ML responded with three straight points. but never could get their FBSO game going against EP. The Crusaders didn't stop the Eagles the last four servers. Three of the last four EP points came on kills from Taylor Simpson.

EP burst out on Molly Noble's serve with 7 straight service points erasing a 2-1 deficit. Right from the start EP established domination at the net with four blocks in the first 8 points. Jessi Peterson had three of the blocks. Alex weathered the storm with their own run after the side out with four points. Their favored way to avoid the block: the tip. Ariel Carlson had three kills in the 5-0 run. Peterson stopped the run with a side out. EP handcuffed Alex the rest of game one with 10 straight side outs. EP also had a harder time scoring off their serve with only Abby Johnson squeeze a few points off her second time through the rotation. Vohnoutka had six kills and a block after game one.
The side out game was not a strong for either team in game two. EP did lead at the start 9-5. 6-7 Alexa Manuel started off with a block while Vohnoutka added three kills in the mix. Alexandria came back to tie the game at 10. An extremely long rally went to EP after a push kill attempt landed just outside the right back corner. Alex went on a three point run to take a 13-12 lead after that, but all points came via EP errors. EP broke the game open on Peterson's three service points after a side out by Vohnoutka. Vohnoutka had three straight kills to start the run and that sealed the Cardinals fate. The final point was anti climatic on a missed serve.

Mayer Lutheran lead early 8-4 early in the contest as Maddie Wickstrom served up three straight points. After Wickstrom serve EP had four straight side outs stifling whatever momentum ML had generated. On the other had EP was generating points on every serve, sometimes three points a server. ML was only able to squeeze one first ball side out in the last seven EP servers.
In game two ML raced out to a 4-0 lead with Sara Kjos providing two straight blocks. After Abby Johnson's serve EP never trailed. Johnson served up five points with Katie Vohnoutka scoring the side out plus two more points in Johnson's serve. Jessi Peterson added seven more service points in the next serve for EP with Vohnoutka chipping in three more points on kills. EP had five straight FBSO in game two as they went on a 22-4 run.
Vohnoutka had 12 kills to lead EP.
