Out & About: Farmington/Holy Angels

#3 posting 10.9.2008
your daily dose of girls volleyball news & information

FARMINGTON tigers 3, HOLY ANGELS stars 0
(25-21, 25-10, 25-22)

Farmington is now alone in second place in the Missota as they swept Holy Angels on the road by a margin of 22 points. Both teams were tied at 4-1 heading into the match. Shakopee is alone in first with a 5-0 record prior to tonight's contest. Farmington closed with a 10-3 run to take the final set. Two Tigers had double digit kills on the night---Katie Habeck had 14 and Danielle Dombeck had 13 for the night. The Tigers' Kirstee Rotty narrowed the gap on her quest for 2000 digs.

Farmington used a 9-2 run in the middle of the first set that put the Tigers in control. The Stars had to use their first time out after a five point Farmington run to make it 11-8. HA did get the side out then and added a kill by Amanda King, but the Tigers added four more points forcing the second Stars time out at 15-10. Again King got the side out. Neither team sided out that strongly at the start of the first set, but once both teams got into rhythm the first ball side outs came easier. HA was 7/8 to close out the first set while Farmington was 7/9. Habeck had six points for the Tigers in set one.

The first four Tiger servers in set two each had runs of 3 or more. Added together Farmington led 18-4 before the Stars got their first side out (and that was off of a missed Tiger serve). This set was over and out quickly. Of the first 8 Farmington points, five were on Stars hitting errors and one missed serve. Danielle Dombeck provided six points in this contest including five in a a8-1 stretch.

The third set was the most interesting. Farmington came out like it was going to be a replay of set two with a 3-0 run. The Stars found their mojo with a 9-3 run. During the run Farmington was forced to take a time out. The Stars pushed their lead out to 19-15 when the Tigers roared back in the action. Habeck got the side out kill that turned the set around. Amanda Rudolph served up four points with Habeck knocking down two more kills. The Stars used both their time outs in that Tiger surge. Habeck had a total of six points in the last 10 points for the Tigers including the final stamp of the night.

This marked the third time I have seen Holy Angels on the year. I have been working off the top 25 list of MaxPreps and Farmington was #25. So that leaves three teams in the top 25 list to see.

Out & About: Holy Angels/Minneapolis Southwest

#4 posting 9.29.2008
your daily dose of girls volleyball news & information

HOLY ANGELS stars 3,
MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST lakers 1
(27-25, 20-25, 25-10, 25-18)

In a Section 6AAA match up it was the visiting Stars over the Lakers and future Gopher Brianna Haugen in four games. The Stars survived game one, saw the Lakers rally for set two, cruise to victory in set three, and finishing up set four with the win.

The first set saw the Lakers jump out to a 5-1 lead only to see the Stars go on a 12-2 run to take a 14-8 lead. SW did take a time out at 13-8, but didn't halt the momentum initially. However the Lakers soon went on a 6-2 run forcing a HA time out. HA won the race to 20 as the Stars led 20-16. However the Lakers rose up with a 8-2 run to be on the verge at 24-22. A side out kill by Michelle Daddario stopped the Laker momentum. That started a 6-1 Star run to put them over the top 27-25 for set one. SW in set one had five blocks, four by Allison Adams. The differential in kills in set one was HA 14, SW 8.

Holy Angels kept that momentum rolling with a four point run to start set two. SW tied the set up at 7 with a 7-3 run. However five of their points came on HA hitting errors. HA edged ahead at 15-12 after a three point run with Amanda King ending two aces. But a missed serve started a 9-2 run for the Lakers. The Lakers kept the heat on as they scored the last three points of the set--two on aces by Brianna Haugen.

Whatever momentum the Lakers had built up in set two disappeared at the start of set three. HA again started off with a 5-0 run. SW was forced to burn a time out and that did get the ball back after a missed serve. However SW's serving game broke down as they ended their own serve three straight times. The Stars took advantage of the down time to build the lead out to 13-7. SW used their last time out at 17-10, two points into a set ending 10-0 run. That rotation on the night for SW had a 13-32 record or .289 mark. Amanda King was serving up the 9 points (the 1st point in the run being a side out) with three points aces including the final point.

SW revamped their line up in set four trying to get back into the flow, but again HA got out of the gate fast with a 4-1 lead. HA had three runs of three or more by the time they had an 11-6 lead. The Lakers took their first time out in set four at 14-9. That did stop the Stars, but only momentarily. After the Lakers closed to 19-15 the Stars finished with a 7-3 run.

An interesting side note: Both Haugen and Haben were team mates on Northern Lights 17-1 team this past summer.

Out & About: Burnsville/Holy Angels

#3 posting 8.28.2008
your daily dose of girls volleyball news & information

BURNSVILLE blaze 3, HOLY ANGELS stars 1
(25-22, 25-27, 25-10, 25-17)

The Burnsville Blaze used their net play and serving game to beat the host Holy Angels Stars 3-1. Burnsville had 15 aces on the night and seven blocks. Tori Dixon provided 23 points including 19 kills in the Blaze win.

This was an early start game to avoid conflict with the Holy Angels football game. Luckily I went to two different web sites, and figured out there was going to be a time issue.

FBSO was a big part in the Burnsville win. Holy Angels struggled to get a FBSO in game one. They were only able to stop the Blaze twice. The first Burnsville run came on two aces by Abby Olson. The next Blaze surge came on a four point run, two of which came on two blocks by Molly Duehn. That put the score at 13-6 Burnsville and forced a HA time out. Another 8-2 run for Burnsville put the Blaze on the brink at 24-12. Dixon had three kills in the run. A missed serve gave the ball back to HA and Madeline Haben made good use of it. She served up nine more points forcing Burnsville to take a time out at 24-17. The Stars shined for five more points. Amanda King had three kills in the resurrection. On the 11th game point HA had a hitting error and Burnsville survived game one.

Holy Angels used the momentum at the end of game one with an early four point run as HA earned all the points with Catherine Hanson delivering two kills. Neither side had stellar side out games in this game---only 33%. Burnsville tied the game at five, and 12, but never got the lead. Each time the Blaze tied it up, the Stars added three more points. The Blaze tied it up again at 18. But again the Stars responded with two points. A key overrule on a serve by Dixon (it was ruled in and then out) gave the ball back to the Stars. After leading 20-18, the Stars missed on a serve with a foot fault. That opened the door for the Blaze and they took advantage of it. They added three more points and led 22-20. HA took two time outs in the run, the second time out stopped the Blaze with Catherine Hanson getting the key side out. The Blaze again were on the verge at 24-21, but they could not get the game point on the next three serves and all of a sudden the Stars fought back. Another missed serve was the break point. Michelle Daddario had two straight kills to put HA back up 25-24. They didn't get the next point, but closed out the second game with a net violation and another Daddario kill. Daddario had seven kills in the second game.

The FBSO problems that bothered the Blaze in game two disappeared in game three. The Blaze had an 8/9 advantage and HA was never really competitive. It started with a run of seven helped by four straight HA hitting errors. HA took a time out to stop the hitting errors, but the Blaze added two more to the total. Another 10-1 Blaze run all put finished off the Stars. Duehn had four points with three kills in the mix as the Blaze stretched the lead to 21-6. The Blaze made some substitutions and both teams traded side outs. Dixon ended game three with two side out kills.

Burnsville put Holy Angels in a 9-2 hole early in game four. Steph McCullum had two aces, and then another stretch of HA hitting errors kept the Stars off their game. The rebounded with a 6-1 run with two points delivered on tip kills by Hanson. But the HA side out game, and the Blaze FBSO game for that matter, was not air tight. The Blaze responded after HA cut the margin to 10-8 with a seven point run. Laura Beckman had two aces in the run as the Blaze enjoyed a 17-8 lead. Dixon scored three of the last four Blaze points, all on kills, but the final point came on Casi Gries only kill of the game.

Burnsville is a little unorthodox with players filling in slots at the net two of the three times they are in the front row. Dixon played in each rotation, and the Blaze used her in the back row often.
