HOLY ANGELS stars 3,
MINNEAPOLIS SOUTHWEST lakers 1
(27-25, 20-25, 25-10, 25-18)
In a Section 6AAA match up it was the visiting Stars over the Lakers and future Gopher Brianna Haugen in four games. The Stars survived game one, saw the Lakers rally for set two, cruise to victory in set three, and finishing up set four with the win.
The first set saw the Lakers jump out to a 5-1 lead only to see the Stars go on a 12-2 run to take a 14-8 lead. SW did take a time out at 13-8, but didn't halt the momentum initially. However the Lakers soon went on a 6-2 run forcing a HA time out. HA won the race to 20 as the Stars led 20-16. However the Lakers rose up with a 8-2 run to be on the verge at 24-22. A side out kill by Michelle Daddario stopped the Laker momentum. That started a 6-1 Star run to put them over the top 27-25 for set one. SW in set one had five blocks, four by Allison Adams. The differential in kills in set one was HA 14, SW 8.
Holy Angels kept that momentum rolling with a four point run to start set two. SW tied the set up at 7 with a 7-3 run. However five of their points came on HA hitting errors. HA edged ahead at 15-12 after a three point run with Amanda King ending two aces. But a missed serve started a 9-2 run for the Lakers. The Lakers kept the heat on as they scored the last three points of the set--two on aces by Brianna Haugen.
Whatever momentum the Lakers had built up in set two disappeared at the start of set three. HA again started off with a 5-0 run. SW was forced to burn a time out and that did get the ball back after a missed serve. However SW's serving game broke down as they ended their own serve three straight times. The Stars took advantage of the down time to build the lead out to 13-7. SW used their last time out at 17-10, two points into a set ending 10-0 run. That rotation on the night for SW had a 13-32 record or .289 mark. Amanda King was serving up the 9 points (the 1st point in the run being a side out) with three points aces including the final point.
SW revamped their line up in set four trying to get back into the flow, but again HA got out of the gate fast with a 4-1 lead. HA had three runs of three or more by the time they had an 11-6 lead. The Lakers took their first time out in set four at 14-9. That did stop the Stars, but only momentarily. After the Lakers closed to 19-15 the Stars finished with a 7-3 run.
An interesting side note: Both Haugen and Haben were team mates on Northern Lights 17-1 team this past summer.
