JO Tournament, Anderson Hired at Crookston

JO TOURNAMENT
Lakeville North is well represented on M1 with Kelsey Brandl, Amy Braun, Taylor Fieldstad and Kristin Ostergaard all on board. They will be playing in the National Junior Olympic volleyball championships in Minneapolis. M1 is rated #7. From the Lakeville this week papers.

UM Crookston has hired Lee Anderson to be their new volleyball coach. Last year he was a coach at D2 school Glenville State in West Virginia. From the Crookston Times.

JO NATIONALS
The USA Volleyball Junior Olympic National Championships open today in Minneapolis at the Convention Center. The StarTribune has a few details on the event. Schedules and results can be found here.

POLICE BLOTTER
The Rochester Post Bulletin has more information on the unsolved murder of former Albert Lea volleyball player April (Larson) Sorenson including a video tape of a press conference.

Steven Van Keuren was found guilty of murder of Teri Lee and Tim Hawkinson. Lee is the sister of Hopkins volleyball coach Vicki Swenson who is quoted in the story. From the Stillwater Gazette.

USA Beats Mexico

USA BEATS MEXICO
Former Gopher Cassie Busse had six kills and one block at the opposite position for seven points in an USA national team 18, 12, 11 sweep over Mexico in the Pan Am Cup volleyball pool play in Colima, Mexico. USA is 5-0 in pool play. Next up will be the semifinals.

JUNIOR OLYMPICS
The JO National tournament opens tomorrow in Minneapolis and runs until July 8. Action takes place at the Convention Center.

The Hutchinson 14 team is getting ready for the national junior olympic tournament being held at the Minneapolis Convention Center starting June 29. From the Hutchinson Leader.

The US National team is undefeated with their latest win over Trinidad & Tobago in an easy three 8/9/5. Team USA is 4-0 now in pool A. Former Gopher Cassie Busse is on the roster, but didn't play in the T&T game.

The M1 171’s finished 1st in the 17’s division at the 1st annual PrepVolleyball Classic held at the Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells defeating TAV (Texas Advantage) in 3 games.

Changing Sections

CHANGING SECTIONS
The Rochester Post Bulletin dissects the changes in the sections for the upcoming season and what it means for local teams in their quest for a state title.
The first change that will be noticeable is the way the three classes are divided. AAA will have 12 teams per section, AA will have 16, and A will have the most at 25.
In 1AAA Lakeville North will no longer be the dominant team as they move to the metro based.

In 1AA Rochester Lourdes returns from the AAA level. That change, along with a couple of others, will bump power Wabasha-Kellogg down to 1A.

ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Mollie Bjelland has been named Pioneer Press Athlete of the year. The Grantsburg, WI senior is headed to Winona State to play volleyball and softball.

POLICE BLOTTER
Troy Bernard, volleyball coach, has resigned from the Montgomery-Lonsdale. He has been charge with sexual conduct with a minor. The LeSueur County Sheriff is investigating whether there are more victims. From the StarTribune South edition.

Meierotto Transfers, Star of the North Results

MEIEROTTO TO TRANSFER
Whitney Meierotto is transferring from UM Duluth to Concordia St. Paul. Meghan Ellis, a 5-10 MH, Wayzata is also walking on at CSP.

STAR OF THE NORTH RESULTS
Jordan won the 18A, Jackson County Central the 16A, and Mabel-Canton the 14A this past weekend. All three teams were the #1 seeds in their bracket.

TITLE IX
Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa is being investigated for Title IX violations. One of the issues is the practice and game facilities for the volleyball team. They use the elementary gym in Brooten. From the West Central Tribune.

Northern Lights 15 1s AAU Champs

NORTHERN LIGHTS 15S AAU CHAMPS
Mizuno Northern Lights 15-1's team won the AAU 15u Open National Championship. Northern Lights beat MAVA 15 Elite, Kentucky 25-18, 21-25, 18-16 to win the championship.
Mollie Geske and Tori Dixon were named AAU All-Americans and Ashley Wittman was named the AAU Tournament MVP. Here is a picture also.
Also Northern Lights 15s 2 were 3rd in the 15 Club division.

WOMEN'S JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEWS
The US women's junior team will be headed to Nakhonrachasima, Thailand July 20-27 for the Junior World Championships. Two future Gophers are rostered on that US squad: Lauren Gibbemeyer, Cretin-Derham Hall and Brook Dieter, Bloomington Kennedy. Dpn't be fooled when they list the home town as Colorado Springs. That is where the team trains.

Coming up even quicker is the Pan American Cup in Colima, Mexico on June 21-29. Former Gophers Charnette Fair and Cassie Busse are on the American squad.

Current Gopher Katie Vatterrodt is on the National A2 Roster.

GOPHER SCHEDULE
The Minnesota Gophers have released their schedule for 2007. They start off at the Notre Dame tournament. The Gophers host the Diet Coke classic on August 31 and September 1 will include Stanford, Ohio and San Diego, all 2006 NCAA tournament teams. There will be another home tournament on September 14-15. Those teams include Charlotte, Creighton and UW Green Bay. Of course all the Big 10 teams will be here as well.

BADGERS LOSE TO ITALY
The Wisconsin Badgers finished up their vollyeball competition on their European trip with a 3-2 loss to the Italian Junior National team in Lignano Sabbiadora Italy. Wisconsin won games one and four. Three of the games were two pointers. Taylor Reineke gets the journal writing call for day 10. The Badgers will now have a two day sightseeing tour of Rome before returning home.

Courtney Halvorson, Red Lake County Central, has signed with North Dakota to play volleyball. Halvorson was a 5-8 OH in High school.

BADGERS IN ITALY
We need to catch up with the Wisconsin Volleyball team as they continue their European tour. We missed yesterday's journal entry from Faye McCormack as they arrived in Venice.
Wisconsin was swept by the Italian Junior National team 25/15, 22, 22.

KLINGSPORN WRITES
Today the Wisconsin Badgers volleyball journal entry is written by Nikki Klingsporn, formerly of Tartan and the Minnesota Miss Volleyball in 2005-06. The team is in Maribor, Slovenia.

TOURNAMENT
PrepVolleyball is holding their first PrepVolleyball Classic at Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells. Session 1 will run Saturday, June 9th – Tuesday, June 12th for 13’s, 14’s and 15’s. Session 2 will run Sunday, June 17th – Thursday, June 21st for 16’s, 17’s and 18’s. M1 will be sending most, if not all, of their teams. Most teams will be from the Midwest, but there are teams coming from Texas, Colorado, California and even Hawaii.

HIGH SCHOOL FALL CLINIC
The Minnesota High School Volleyball Fall Clinic will be held at Monticello on August 1 and 2. The All Star game will take place on August 1. A tentative schedule can be found here, and registration here.

POLICE BLOTTER
Troy Bernard, a Montgomery Middle school teacher and Montgomery-Lonsdale varsity volleyball coach has been charged with first degree sexual conduct. The alledged relationship started last summer when he was coaching volleyball. From KARE 11. You can also watch the video report.

M1 Tournament Results; Badgers in Vienna

M1 TOURNAMENT RESULTS
M1 held a JO tournament this past weekend and Hutchinson 14s won the 14/13 tournament on Saturday.
On Sunday Chaska 161s took the title in the 15/16 level.

The two photos are of the M1 14 Green team as they faced Hutchinson in the 8 am tournament opener. They are of two different servers. I now have a new camera and I am hoping that the photos will be better than what I put up last fall. These two were the best of the bunch. I like the one on the left as the ball is frozen. The one on the right isn't as frozen.

WISCONSIN BADGER TRIP
OH Brittney Dolgner is the journal writer for day 3 of the Badger trip to Europe. They are in Brno in the Czech Republic. The Badgers lost to KP Brno in four 21-25, 25-22, 25-17 and 25-20.
In their first game Wisconsin lost to PK Olymp Prague 25-18, 24-26, 25-16, 26-24.
Former Tartan player Nikki Klingsporn is part of the Badger squad.

Team Minnesota Results in the US Open

USA OPEN
Team Minnesota placed 4th in the US Open last weekend in Austin, TX. Final standing here. Team MN finished 7-4 with two losses coming at the hands of the Dub
Jen Bowman was named All Tournament 2nd Team. You can see photos of all the All tournament teams.
Team Minnesota's roster included familiar names to Gopher fans: Kelly Bowman, Jessica Byrnes, Megan Crumpston, Meredith Nelson and Lindsey Taatjes.

COACHING NEWS
Princeton will have their third coach in three years. Coach Cindy Schmatz will not return.
