Rolf Resigns at Marquette, Around the Signing Block

COLLEGE REPORTS
ROLF RESIGNS
Marquette coach Pati Rolf has resigned immediately. Assistant coach Erica Heisser takes over. Rolf is from Hopkins and attended North Dakota State.

BIG 10
#19 Michigan swept Ohio State with a margin of 30 points. Karlee Bruck had 11.5 points for the Wolverines. Katie Dull had 12.5 points for the Buckeyes. Susan Halverson (Apple Valley) had 5 digs and 1 point for OSU.

Michigan State travels to Michigan and Ohio State this weekend.

Allison Straumann of Cary Grove, IL has signed with Iowa. The 5-11 outside hitter is a first team all state player according to the Chicago Sun Times and Chicago Daily Herald.

VERBALS
Shannon Byers of Faribault has verballed South Carolina Aiken. The OH played with Northern Lights 17-2 last year.
Byers is the 24th player overall in the 2009 Minnesota class to verbal and the 12th headed to a D2 program.

Young & in Charge, Tan Honored

YOUNG & IN CHARGE
Wendy Vang, a 2007 Minneapolis Henry graduate and former player of mine, is co-head coach at Minneapolis Roosevelt. Vang is featured in the StarTribune.
Former Roosevelt coach Jill Kalvik is now an assistant volleyball coach at the University of Chicago. Kalvik also was an assistant at Henry before taking over at Roosevelt.

AWARDS
The Big 10 has released their first weekly awards. Nicole Fawcett of Penn State and Laura DeBruhler of Illinois were co offensive players of the week. It is Fawcett's 6th and DeBruhler's 3rd honor in their careers. The Gopher's Christine Tan was named defensive player of the week. It is her 3rd honor.
Over the last weekend six Big 10 players were MVPs in the various tournaments the 11 teams played. Brook Dieter was MVP in the Creighton tournament.

POLLS
Minnesota jumped four spots in the latest CSTVAVCA poll. Six Big 10 teams reside in the poll, with Penn State #1. Colorado State is #17, the same as last week.

YESTERDAY'S RESULTS
FIU beat Furman in four on Labor Day. Pamela Gehrke (Eastview) played but did not put up numbers.

TONIGHT
Iowa State travels to Creighton tonight.

North Dakota hosts Bemidji State. UND has beat BSU five straight times.

LATE RESULTS
COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Ridgewater won the UW Whitewater JV/CC tournament. Leah Miller and Jordan Olerud had 25 kills each for the day. From the West Central Tribune.

MN West won the silver bracket at the Allen County CC tournament in Kansas. From the Worthington Daily Globe.

Central Lakes finished 0-4 at the Iowa Lakes tournament. NDSCS also finished 0-4 at IL. From the Brainerd Dispatch and Wahpeton Daily News.

HIGH SCHOOL

Berg Returns, Henning Verbals

Former Gopher Lindsey Berg will return to be a consultant to the Gophers. From the StarTribune.

There are four new coaches in the West Central coverage area: New London-Spicer, Yellow Medicine East, Central Christian and Morris.

BIG 10 NEWS
Indiana has named Juli Pierce and Erica Short captains. The Hoosiers will be at Long Beach State this weekend.

Ohio State held their Scarlet & Gray scrimmage yesterday. The Buckeyes have bonded by giving back.

Wisconsin players talk about their goals for the 2008 season on their countdown video feature.

Purdue will host the Mortar Board Premier. Kansas State, Tennessee State and Duke will attend.

The Green swept the White in Marshall's scrimmage. Megan Carlson of Andover had 5 kills for the White.

WANTED: Northern Iowa will have open tryouts on September 2.

South Carolina is off to Las Vegas for the UNLV tournament.

Portland is headed to the Montana State Tournament.

Wisconsin is 12th in the preseason volleyball Magazine poll.

BIG 10
Ohio State is picked for 9th in the Big 10.

PRESEAON D1 OUTLOOKS
Colorado State is picked to win the Mountain West Conference. Tessa Nelson of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton plays with CSU.

Cincinnati is picked for third in the Big East. Kelsey Brandl of Lakeville North is on the Cincinnati roster.

Megan Carlson of Andover had a good start in Marshall's Green vs White scrimmage with 14 kills to lead all players.

Ohio has finished one week of practice.

Washington State has named Emily Rooney of Red Wing as one of their three captains.

D2 OUTLOOKS
The NCAA has released the 10 teams and 10 players to watch this fall. Two teams from the Northern Sun--UM Duluth and Concordia St. Paul make the list. Three players from the Northern Sun make the list: Maria Gangelhoff (UMD), Maggie McNamara (Concordia-SP); and Ashley Nachreiner (MSU Mankato).

D3 PRESEASON START
D3 starts their practices today.
St. Thomas looks to make another deep run in the D3 playoffs.

Here are preseason previews of UW Superior from the Superior Daily Telegram. UWS has hired Chelsea Meierotto (UM Duluth) and Anne LeBard (UW Superior) as assistant coaches.

COACHING NEWS
UI Chicago has two new assistants, one of which is Tim Walenga, a volunteer, who received his master of arts in athletic administration from Minnesota State University-Mankato in 2001.

OLYMPICS
The American women beat China in five games. Both head coaches are Chinese. From the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Both former Gophers Lindsey Berg in indoor, and Nicole Branagh on the beach continue their successful run in the Olympics.
Branagh and Youngs advanced to the quarterfinals with a sweep of Cuba.

Hugh McCutcheon, the USA men's volleyball coach has returned to the bench. This was the first time he was back at the helm since the attack that killed his father in law Todd Bachman. From the StarTribune.

BACHMAN UPDATE
Barbara Bachman has returned to Minnesota to continue her recovery from the attack suffered last weekend. Bachman is at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. From the StarTribune and Rochester Post Bulletin.

HIGH SCHOOL PRESEASON
Farmington has a strong core returning with Danielle Dombeck, Kirstee Rotty, and Katie Habeck. From the Farmington Independent.

PRESEASON OUTLOOK
NORTHERN SUN
The Northern Sun conference released their preseason picks and Concordia St. Paul is the favorite to take the title with 12 votes. CSP's Maggie McNamara has been named preseason player of the year. UM Duluth and MSU Mankato each had one vote for first and are picked for second and third respectively. UMD has a video report from the Northland's NewsCenter with Coach Boos and setter Katie Gangelhoff interviewed.
Southwest MN State is picked for 4th.
Bemidji State is picked for 11th.

BIG 10
Illinois held media day on Wednesday.

Indiana will hold Hoosier Hitter Clinics this fall.

BACHMAN
Barbara Bachman's condition has been upgraded from critical to serious. Bachman's husband Todd was murdered in Beijing. Bachman is the mother of Elisabeth "Wiz" Bachman who is married to Hugh McCutcheon, the USA men's indoor volleyball coach. Bachman is being mourned by his company and friends. From the Star Tribune.

Leaving South Dakota State, Looking for Beach Gold

BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Former Gopher Nicole Branagh is looking for gold on the beach at Beijing. This is teammate Elaine Youngs third Olympics. From the St. Paul Pioneer Press and NBC.

MORE OLYMPICS
American indoor volleyball coach Jenny Lang Ping has returned to Beijing. Here is a press conference along with the men's indoor coach.

LEAVING SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
SDSU has had two players leave (and one verbal) after coach Andrew Palileo left for Washington State. They only have one player with 45 kills returning. From the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

PRESEASON OUTLOOKS
The first official practices start tomorrow for colleges.
Indiana has released their preseason preview.

Iowa State is hoping to return to the NCAA tournament for the third straight time.

Rhode Island is picked to finish 4th in the Atlantic 10 West (?) division. Jillian Bekke of Cretin-Derham Hall plays for the Rams.

Ohio starts their practice at 9 am Saturday.

COACHING NEWS
Stephanie Blackburn of Ohio University '07 will be a volunteer assistant at Ohio State. OSU coach Geoff Carlston was the coach at Ohio previously. Shane Wilkinson has been named director of volleyball operations.

TELEVISION
Wisconsin will be on national television five times, four times on the Big 10 Network, once on ESPN2.

Chambers Verbals, Youngest Coach

CHAMBERS VERBALS
Brittany Chambers has made a verbal to Kansas State for basketball. The multiple sport athlete also entertained several D1 volleyball offers.

COACHING NEWS
Minneapolis Roosevelt has hired Wendy Vang as their new girls volleyball coach. She replaces Jill Kalvik who is now an assistant coach at the University of Chicago. Vang is the youngest head coach in the state at 19 years old. She is a 2007 high school grad from Minneapolis Henry. Last year she was an assistant at Henry.
This is the third coach that used to assist me that is now a head coach: John Yunker of St. Michael-Albertville, Bill Quan of Osseo and now Vang at Roosevelt. The odd thing was Kalvik also was an assistant with me at Henry. There must be something in the water.

Doreen Matteson is the new volleyball coach at Bigfork.
Brooke Schaffer is the new volleyball coach at Robbinsdale Cooper.
Former SW Star coach Rick Haberman is an assistant at Tracy-Milroy-Balaton this year. He teaches in TMB.
Lesley Bonin is the new volleyball coach at Eagan.
Leah Welch is the new volleyball coach at Totino-Grace

OLYMPIC SCHEDULE
FIVB has released the Olympic schedule for beach volleyball.
On August 9th former Gopher Nicole Branagh and teammate Elaine Youngs plays a pair from the Netherlands at 6 pm Beijing time. Misti May-Traenor and Kerri Walsh open their play the next day at 9 am.

NAIA TOURNAMNET

Peterson Resigns, Coaching Clinic & All Star Game Today

Katy Peterson has resigned as University of North Dakota volleyball coach. Her twin Kari will be the interim coach this year.

ACADEMICS
Creighton and North Dakota State both have won an AVCA academic award for the fifth straight year.

CLINIC
The Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Clinic begins today at Sauk Rapids at 3 pm. The All Star game takes place at 7 pm.

NORCECA Tournament, High Performance Camp, Sparby Returns

Tammy Sparby will return as Thief River Falls volleyball coach. She resigned at the end of last season. From the Bemidji Pioneer toward the end of Jim Carrington's column.

HIGH PERFORMANCE CAMP
The High Performance camp wrapped up in Tucson. USA Junior White won the gold in the Women’s International Division. Arizona Region High Performance won the Girls' International Youth Division title.

NORCECA TOURNAMENT
The U.S. Women’s Junior National Team beat Cuba 3-1 to advance to the title game of the NORCECA tournament in Mexico. The US will face the Dominican Republic for the championship.

COACHING NEWS
Margaret Essler will return to coach New London-Spicer for the third time. She will be co-coach with Mimi Knutson, a former coach at Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa. They replace Kay Czarnetzki who resigned after last season. From the West Central Tribune.

Long time Minneota assistant Stephanie Hennen has been hired as head coach. From the Marshall Independent.

Kelli Kurth will return as Lincoln HI's head volleyball coach. Last couple lines in the Marshall Independent.

Michigan State has the 7th best recruiting class according to prepvolleyball.com.

COACHING NEWS
Sauk Rapids is looking for a volleyball coach. Former coach Paul Meyer is now the head coach at Waldorf College in Iowa. From the St. Cloud Times.

Katie McGuine has been Director of Operations for Purdue. She was DO at Iowa the last two years. She also was the head coach at Pine Island. She is a grad of Rochester Lourdes and MSU Mankato.

NORTHERN LIGHTS TRIP

NORCECA Champs

NORCECA TOURNAMENT
The US Youth National team swept Mexico in the championship of the NORCECA Youth Continental Championship in Puerto Rico. The Americans will now head to India for the FIVB championships next year. Tori Dixon and Ashley Wittman each had 10 points in the win.

Before that the Americans swept host Puerto Rico in the semis on Wednesday. Tori Dixon has her photo on the article as she led the team with 13 points.

GRAND PRIX
The Americans lost to Cuba in five in the third Grand Prix contest. Former Gopher Lindsey Berg plays for the team.

COACHING NEWS
Lincoln HI is still looking for a volleyball coach. No one has applied yet. Late in the article from the Marshall Independent.

Angie Mlinar has been hired as the director of volleyball operations at Iowa. Mlinar was a grad assistant at Alabama the last two years. Mlinar is originally from St. Paul, Nebraska.

EUROPEAN TRIP
In day three Northern Lights went from London to Sanstead. Here are the photos. Ellen Senf writes the journal for day 3.

RETURN HOME
North Dakota player Amanda Polzin returned to Hutchinson to do a camp. From the Hutchinson Leader.

CONFERENCE NEWS
South Dakota and North Dakota will join the Great West Conference in all sports, not just football.

COLLEGE DECISIONS
The Press Newspapers in the Northeast Metro Area has listed the college decisions of six different schools. The volleyball players:
Becka Meiser, Centennial, Northern State
Chelsie Sobieck, Forest Lake, St. Benedict
Meiser is the 28th D2 player, Sobieck is the 14th D3, and together they are the 67th and 68 players headed to college to play volleyball from the Minnesota 2008 class.

COACHING NEWS
Kim Fletcher has been hired as an assistant volleyball coach at South Dakota State. She is from Missouri and played her college ball at Notre Dame.

Former TMB volleyball coach Katie Gervais will be the new Tracy-Milroy-Balaton coach. Gervais was away from the job for two years. Gervais won two titles with TMB in 2001 and 2004. From the Marshall Independent.

Heidi Peterson has resigned as volleyball coach at Minneota to take the B squad job at Marshall. Peterson teaches in Marshall. Peterson won the A title in 2006. From the Marshall Independent.
