The #11 Minnesota Gophers upset the #4 California Bears in the opening game in the Diet Coke Classic in Minneapolis. The Gophers took the lead in game one at 13-12 and only had one dip in game three in taking down the undefeated Bears. The Gophers used a First Ball Side Out % of .644 to stop the Bears. Minnesota's defense was stellar most of the night only giving up two runs in the entire match. The Gophers were able to get seven runs on their own.

The Gophers finished game one with three straight points, their second run in that "set" after a time out at 22-21. Gibbemeyer got the key side out. With Hailey Cowles serving, the Bears had a hitting error and then Cowles put down an ace.

California switched things up in game two starting off in their 4th rotation to serve trying to avoid some of the hitting /blocking match ups. Another well placed time out at 22-20 stopped a two point run for the Bears and Brook Dieter got the key side out. Gibbemeyer then served out with Kelly Schmidt getting the final kill.

At one point in the third game the Gophers passing got off kilter which diminished the quality of attacks. The result was a five point run for the Bears and a 7-5 California lead. California maintained that until Pamela Luiz used her extreme short serve for six straight points. The serve forced California to tight ball placement on the net and Gibbemeyer had three straight to put the Gophers back in front 14-11. That also forced Cal to take a time out. Cal did get the game tied up again at 17. Gibbemeyer had a kill and a block to put the Gophers on the verge at 23-21. A Bears time out got the ball back at 23-22. The Gophers used their first time out and Gibbemeyer came up with a block for a 24-22 lead. A hitting error tightened up the game at 24-23 and the Gophers got another time out. This time Dieter finished the contest and the Gophers had a Bear Trophy.
