Hutch, Osseo, and DeLaSalle Win

TUESDAY NIGHT RESULTS
Hutchinson opened with a sweep over New Ulm. From the Hutchinson Leader.

Osseo beat Meadow Creek 3-1 in a cross class game. Osseo lost game one 23-25, then swept the rest. Game 2 was fairly tight, while games 3, and 4 were more comfortable wins for the Orioles.

DeLaSalle also won 3-1 over Mpls Henry. Henry took the first game 25-18 only trailing at 1-0. In game two DLS broke it open on a four point service run by Tess Melby to make it 19-11. Game three was nip and tuck up to an 19-17 lead after a DLS sideout. Henry never got the ball back as #15 served up six straight points. That momentum carried over into game four with a quick 7-1 lea by DLS. So over the course of two games DLS outscored Henry 14-1. It was difficult to play out of the hole and DLS went on to take game four 25-15. Kiah Hanssen-Kilpatrick had seven kills and five aces to lead Henry.

MORE HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEWS
Hutchinson has two veteran setters to start the season: Brittany Stamer who is headed to MSU Mankato next year and Ashley Maher. Stamer is the 15th player that has verballed this season, and the 7th to go D2. Hutch opens with New Ulm tonight. From the Hutchinson Leader.

The Rochester Post Bulletin has capsules, rosters and schedules of the four Rochester schools. Rochester JM has a new coach: Amir Dzamalija, a former pro player in the Bosnian League.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE LATE RESULTS
Riverland won the Fergus Falls tournament last weekend with a 3-1 mark. They defeated Rochester, and Itasca in pool play, but also lost to MN West. Riverland topped Hibbing 2-1 in the championship. From the Austin Daily Herald.

Here is the coaches poll Week #2.
Eden Prairie did move up to #5 in AAA switching spots with Owatonna. St. Michael-Albertville nosed out Apple Valley for the 10 spot.
In AA DGF jumped from 5 to 2; with Marshall and Stewartville each dropping a notch. Hibbing dropped two spots. Pipestone and Belle Plaine each advanced, while Delano fell to 10.
In A the jam at the top is close with three teams within an eyelash of each other. Bethlehem Academy stays in first with a one point lead over Minneota and Windom. Moving up this week include: Mayer Lutheran and Ada-Borup plus Meadow Creek Christian, Renville County West and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa all make the list for the first time. Out & About: Visitation/St. Paul Central

VISITATION blazers 3, ST. PAUL CENTRAL minutemen 1

I checked the websites today and thought this game started at 7:30 (MN scores). However the MSHSL site apparently had been changed to 6 pm. So when I showed up at 6:45 I was 45 minutes late, not 45 minutes early. As it was I was able to see a portion of game two and then the full games three and four.

Both teams were AAA foes in section 3 last year. This year Visitation moves down to AA, but they kept the scheduled game. SPC won last year in three. This year Visitation turned the tables in the Central gym. When I arrived game one had already fallen into the Visitation column. However it was 13 all when I walked in. By the time I had my chart ready to go Visitation was up 15-13. Visitation finished with a 10-4 run, 7 points of which came on SPC errors.

Visitation led early 8-5 with Peggy Dobihal's four service points. Central took a time out trailing 7-5. After the time Central went on a 5-2 run to tie the game at 9. A missed serve gave the ball back to Visitation. That started a 7-2 run for Visitation. Courtney Kranz led the charge with two of her 4.5 blocks (that I witnessed). Visitation maintained that margin out to 21-18 when SPC burned their final time out. The Blazers were on the verge as Central was caught in the net. However a missed serve gave SPC new life. That proved to be the catalyst for an 8-3 run. Central closed to 23-22, but an overpass kill by Kranz put Visitation one point away. Central held on and Viz had a passing error on the next ball. That started a three point run due to Visitation errors and it was Central's turn to be up 25-24. Again it was Kranz preventing the loss with a kill. SPC's Megan Tate had a kill and then Ellen Senf put down an overpass kill to give Central a win.

Visitation put their foot down early in game four with leads of 8-2 after #33 (their libero) five service points. The fact was Central only had two first ball side outs of the nine service marks by Visitation. Visitation started off with three straight FBSO. Jessica Adducci had three kills for Visitation in this game.

Michigan Hawaii Champs

Michigan won the ASICS Rainbow Wahine Invitational with a sweep over Colorado State.

Iowa picked up their first win of the year in their own tournament with a 3-1 victory over Marquette.

Middle Tennessee State handed Iowa State a season opening 1-3 defeat. Hills-Beaver Creek's Erin Boeve had 9 kills for ISU.

UW Green Bay lost to the hosts in the Central Michigan tournament 3-1. Bethlehem Academy's Betty Slinger had her first triple double on the year for UWGB.

Out & About: Gophers/Alumni

The Minnesota Gophers open the home season with an exhibition against the alumni, and the youngster beat the veterans in a sweep. The Gophers experimented with different looks in each game with major changes in game three.

Christine Tan ripped four straight aces for the Gophers in game one after the Alumni built up a 2-0 lead. The current Gophers never trailed after that. The Alumni did however tie the game three times the last time at 12 all. Brooke Dieter led the way for the current crop of Gophers with five kills. Her Outside partner Kayla Roehrig knocked down four kills. Both teams each had 10 First ball side outs with the alumni actually having a better FBSO% of .588 to .556. The difference was the current Gophers had that four ace run by Tan, the alumni never had three straight points off any of their servers.

Game two the Gophers of 2007 dominated. Their FBSO% clocked in at .769 while the alumni had a .385 margin. Jessy Jones controlled the net with six kills, plus she had a part in two blocks for points. During a 10-2 run in the early part of the game, Jones had six of those points. Kelly Roysland served up five points during the run.

Game three saw massive changes with both Dieter and Roehrig sitting and Roysland and Cowles hitting left side. Also sitting was Jessy Jones and Rachel Hartmann. Replacing Jones was Charde Phillips and taking over the setting duties for Hartmann was Caitlin Schneider. Even with all the personal moves the 2007 Gophers jumped out to a 9-3 lead with two new servers throwing the alumni a curve. Michelle Wilber delivered three straight points, as did Krista Chin. The Gophers pushed the lead to 11-4. Lauren Gibbemeyer had five points as she started to rule the net. The Alumni slowly started chipping away at the lead. Five Gopher errors helped to cut the lead to 19-14. The Alumni blitzed forward with an 11-5 run to take a 25-24. The Alumni didn't have numbers, and I wasn't totally familiar with all their personal, but they put down six kills in this sequence. Hailey Cowles put an end to the alumni run with an overpass kill for a side out and then hammered one home on Chin's serve to give the lead and momentum back to the current squad. The 2007ers finished up with a 6-1 run to take the match 3-0. Gibbemeyer had 7 kills and a hand in three blocks for points.

The alumni included: 21 players with the most senior member being Monika Getchell (Lacis) from the class of 1979 all the way up to last year's group of Kelly Bowman, Meredith Nelson, and Malama Peniata. All in all there was one player from the 70s; six from the 80s; three from the 90s; and nine from the 2000 decade.

North Dakota State Wins Sun Bowl

MORE D1 ACTION
UConn swept Manhattan at home. Bridget Denson-Dorman had 22 assists for UConn.

Creighton won twice in their own tournament on Saturday with a sweep over Montana State. Allie Oelke had seven kills. The Blue jays also swept Stephen F. Austin. Oelke had 8 aces for the tournament to set a new record.

Denver lost to Alabama in four and then beat Seton Hall in a sweep in the Sooner Legends tournament. Kresson Vreeman of Central Christian had 34 assists vs Alabama and 42 against Seton Hall.

Fairfield lost twice at the Aztec Invitational on Saturday. The Stags were swept by host San Diego State and fell to UC Santa Barbara in four. Karlie Urbaniak of Mabel-Canton had 11 kills for Fairfield vs San Diego State.

North Dakota State ruined host UTEP (Texas El Paso) Sun Bowl Invitational with a five game win. Earlier in the day they dropped Texas Southern in three. Christy Stuewe (Mayer Lutheran) was named MVP of the tournament. The awards didn't stop there for the Bison with Kari Fagnan (Fridley) nabbing the MVLibero award. Kelly Lopez (DGF) also was named All tournament.

Northern Iowa swept Wright State with Champlin Park's Amy Sampson notching 15 kills. In the second game of the UNI tournament, the Panthers fell to Kentucky in five. Sampson had 10 kills in this contest.

Providence swept Holy Cross to open the season. Sarah Fleming of Cretin-Derham Hall had 16 kills for Providence.

Stony Brook was 2-1 this weekend at the Buffalo Classic. They lost to North Carolina in four on Friday. On Saturday they beat host Buffalo in a sweep and then edged Baylor in five. Alicia Nelson of Eastview had 5 kills against the Tar Heels.

At the Super 8 Classic at Central Michigan, UW Green Bay twice: a four gamer with Siena and then a sweep loss to Robert Morris. Bethlehem Academy's Betty Slinger had 53 assists against Siena. She had 35 assists against Robert Morris.

BIG 10 PLAY
Illinois finished 2nd in the Dayton Flyer Classic sweeping IPFW and losing to the hosts in five. Laura DeBruhler and Vicki Brown made all tournament.

Indiana won twice on Saturday with wins over Northern Illinois in five and followed by a four game win over Western Illinois.

Iowa fell to #17 BYU in five in the Hawkeye Challenge.

Oregon State was the next victim for Michigan in a sweep in Hawaii.

Michigan State lost two more matches on Saturday. MSU lost a four gamer with Loyola Marymount and then were swept by St. John's.

Northwestern won the Chicago Challenge with a sweep over Illinois-Chicago. Courtnie Paulus was MVP of the Challenge and Lindsay Anderson and Kate Nobilio were on the all tournament team.

Ohio State won the Active Ankle tournament with a sweep over Maine, followed by a sweep over host Ball State.

#3 Penn State topped #4 Texas 3-1. No it is not deja vu, they played twice with the same result from Friday.

#13 Purdue split matches at the Duke Invitational. The Boilermakers swept East Carolina and then fell to the host #18 Duke squad in four.

#11 Wisconsin won their own Inn Towner tournament with a sweep of Gardner-Webb and another sweep of Syracuse. The Badgers' Jackie Simpson was named MVP. Brittney Dolgner, and Jocelyn Wack also made the all tournament team.

Three Teams Start 4-0

Volleyball tournaments wrapped up yesterday with three area teams unblemished at 4-0: Concordia St. Paul; South Dakota; and MN State Mankato.

Ramada Downtown Minneapolis--Concordia St. Paul Tournament
#6 Concordia St. Paul swept Barry and then the Golden Bears kept the brooms out for Millersville. CSP finished the tournament 4-0. Next up will be the Days Inn Denver West tournament next weekend sponsored by the Colorado School of Mines.

#2 UM Duluth split their Saturday matches sweeping Northern Michigan early and then lost to #7 Truman State in five.

Best Western Alamosa Inn--Adams State
Winona State split their games Saturday with a four game loss to Western New Mexico and a sweep over Dixie State.

Ferris State Tournament
St. Cloud State finished 2-2 at Ferris State with a four game win over the Colorado School of Mines and then getting swept by #11 Grand Valley State.

Mile High Classic
South Dakota starts the season at 4-0 with a pair of wins on Saturday. USD swept Chadron State and then the Coyotes defeated Indianapolis in four in the final match.

North Alabama Classic
North Dakota ended their stay at this tournament 0-4 getting swept narrowly by North Alabama, and then dropping a fiver to Tusculum.

Nova Southeastern Sharks Classic
MN State Mankato wrapped up their stay in Florida with a 4-0 mark. They outlasted Lynn in five and then swept Dowling.

Augustana finished the tournament 3-1 with two wins on Saturday. They swept Dowling and defeated the hosts, Nova Southeastern, in four.

UN Kearney
Northern State split Saturday getting swept by the hosts UNK in the first match and then wrapping up the tournament with a five game win the hard way against NW Missouri State. NSU trailed 0-2 against NW.

UN Omaha Classic
UN Omaha finished 3-1 in their own tournament with two wins on Saturday. The Mavericks bumped off Mary in three; UNO topped Colorado State Pueblo in four.

San Bernardino Tournament
#25 SW MN State upset #4 UC San Diego in five. The Mustangs wons game 1, 2, and 5. Erin Contons and Leah Ashburn made the all tournament team. Host #3 Cal State San Bernardino swept the Mustangs in the final match.

Ramada Downtown Minneapolis tournament---Concordia St. Paul
#6 Concordia St. Paul swept past #7 Truman State in a heavyweight bout Friday evening. Earlier in the day the Golden Bears defeated Northern Michigan in four.

UM Duluth won their first two games at CSP with victories over a convincing sweep over Millersville and a four game match with Barry.

Best Western Alamosa Inn/Grizzly Volleyball Classic--Adams State
Winona State beat the hosts (Adams State) in five with wins coming in 3, 4, and 5. Earlier in the day WSU defeated Grand Canyon State 3-1.

Coyote Classic Cal State San Bernardino
#25 SW MN State had two wins yesterday in California. The Mustangs swept California State Dominguez Hills and then won a fiver with Regis. From the Marshall Independent.

Ferris State Tournament
St. Cloud State split to start their season with a win in five with Saginaw Valley State followed by a 3-0 loss to Northwood.

Mile High Classic
South Dakota started the season with a four game win over Western State. It was the Coyotes' first season opening win since 2000. The Coyotes kept the momentum going with a sweep over the hosts Colorado Christian.

North Alabama Classic
North Dakota lost twice to open the season being swept by #8 Ashland followed by a 3-1 loss to Northern Kentucky.

MN State Mankato defeated Franklin Pierce in a sweep and did the same to Palm Beach Atlantic.

#21 Wayne State swept the hosts in the season opener.

UN Kearney Fall Classic
Northern State won their first two matches of the year with a pair of sweeps over Montavello and St. Martin's.

UN Omaha Classic
#18 UN Omaha split their first matches in their own tournament with a sweep in the opener against Montana State Billings followed by a loss in five to MN State Moorhead.

UConn swept Hartford. Bridget Denson-Dorman of Hopkins (and Armstrong) had 32 assists for UConn.

Creighton lost to Middle Tennessee State in three. Chaska's Allie Oelke had the only three aces on the night for Creighton.

Fairfield was swept by Long Island in the Aztec Invitational in San Diego. Cretin-Derham Hall's Lauren Wagner two digs and a kill in her collegiate debut.

High Point split their games yesterday with a win over North Carolina A&T and a loss to Austin Peay. Armstrong's Stephanie Wallin had 8 kills out of the middle for HP.

North Dakota State opened with two wins over Texas Pan American and Marist at the Sun Bowl Invitational in El Paso. DGF's Kelly Lopez had 18 kills in the win over TPA.

Northern Iowa swept Western Michigan in the Northern Iowa Invitational. Champlin Park's Amy Sampson provided the match winning kill.

GOPHERS SWEEP NOTRE DAME
Minnesota won their season opener on the road with a narrow sweep over Notre Dame. The last two contests were 30-28. Freshman Brooke Dieter had 18 kills. Minnesota faces the alumni on Sunday at 1 pm at the Pavilion.

OTHER BIG 10 ACTION
Illinois beat Bowling Green 3-1 with freshman Laura DeBruhler putting down 28 kills. Illinois box score.

Indiana had an ordeal with their bus, and then had their match cancelled because of floods in the Midwest.

Iowa was hosting the Hawkeye challenge in Iowa City.

Michigan made some big noise by dropping #10 Hawaii in five in Honolulu.

#6 USC made sure there were no upsets in a sweep over Michigan State.

Northwestern moves to the championship of the Chicago Challenge with a sweep of Chicago Loyola.

It was a rare Friday without the Friday Night Lights so volleyball was center stage at a variety of schools throughout the state.

ALBANY TOURNAMENT
Rocori went 4-0 to win the Albany Tournament yesterday. They defeated host Albany in the finals in two. Rocori did not lose a game on the day. From the St. Cloud Times (towards the end of the round up.

#2 Shakopee defeated #10 Eden Prairie in the marquee event of the night in four games. EP won the first game. From the Shakopee Valley News.

GOPHERS OPEN TODAY

Out & About: Hopkins/Anoka

HOPKINS royals 3, ANOKA tornadoes 1
(20-25, 25-21, 25-11, 25-23)

It was opening night for high school volleyball in Minnesota and Hopkins came away from Anoka with a 3-1 win despite losing the first game. Hopkins coach Vicky Swenson was not on the bench tonight. Early in the week I linked a story on her return to the bench. Three players had 12 kills on the night: Cali Carnahan for Hopkins; and Kayla Berning and Abbey Fahnhorst for Anoka.

Anoka took control early in game one with eight straight points to lead 9-2. Jamie Olson had four kills during the sequence. Hopkins took a time out at 8-2, but only slowed the momentum. Anoka led 16-9 when Hopkins ran off six points, the last five coming on Sara Young's serve (There was no program for Hopkins and they have not posted their roster on the MSHSL site yet.) The margin narrowed to 17-16 when the game entered side out land. 11 straight side outs gave Anoka a 22-20 lead. Anoka's Kellee Kackman then served out including an ace on point 24.

Hopkins took over early in game two and led 10-5 after an ace by Cali Carnahan. Anoka took a time out to stop the momentum, but Anoka didn't get the side out until one more Hopkins point was scored. Anoka cut the margin to 12-8 when Hopkins burned a time out. After the break Hopkins survived a marathon point with an Anoka hitting error returning the ball back to the Royals. Hopkins pushed the lead to 18-12 when Anoka used their second time out after a kill by Courtney Rose. Six side outs later Hopkins was on the verge at 21-15. They added another point on a hitting error to go up 22-15. Anoka then came to life with a 6-1 run with Kelly Peterson serving up three points (19-21) with the first two aces. With the score 23-21 she served in the net. Hopkins took game two on a double hit fault by Anoka.

Hopkins again held the advantage early in game three. They led 10-6 when Anoka took their first time out. Hopkins maintained that margin out to 17-11 when they earned a sideout with a kill by Mari Peterson. #14 (sorry again no roster anywhere) served the rest out---seven straight points. Carnahan had three kills including the last two points on overpass kills.

Anoka led 6-0 to start game four on Kackman's serve with Fahnhorst picking up three kills for the Tornadoes. Anoka led 9-2 when Hopkins took a time out. That break turned the tide. Hopkins ran off a 8-2 run and forced Anoka to burn a time out at 11-10. The Tornadoes maintained that narrow lead. Their last positive margin came at 20-17. The momentum turned to the Royals favor on a bump kill side out by Rose followed by three straight points on Peterson's serve with three different Royals putting the ball down. Olson tied it at 21 for Anoka with a tip kill. The next Hopkins points came via Anoka hitting errors. The last four points were all side outs with Anoka in the net on point 25.

NEW HIGH SCHOOL
Shakopee has a new high school and the volleyball team is seen practicing in the article in the StarTribune South edition. They are already talking about a second high school in the Shakopee District. Shakopee is #2 in the AAA poll. From the Shakopee Valley News.

Hopkins volleyball coach Vicki Swenson has returned to the sidelines. Last fall her sister, Teri Lee, was murdered and Swenson took time off to deal with that tragedy. Now she is back for the Royals. From the StarTribune West edition.

Iowa State's Erin Boeve is moving from the middle to the outside this season. She has an interview during media day at ISU. Boeve played high school volleyball at Hills-Beaver Creek, MN.

The Minnesota Gophers are rated #9 in the preseason AVCA poll. KARE 11 also has video and interviews with coach Hebert, Jessy Jones, and Kelly Roysland. It is longer than what you might have seen on television. The StarTribune has a look at the 4th best recruiting class, and a thumbnail of the rosters and important games. The MN Daily also looks at the high expectations of this year's squad.

In D2 UM Duluth is #2, Concordia St. Paul #6 and SW MN State #25 in the the AVBCA poll.

NORTH DAKOTA STATE SENIOR LEADERS

PRACTICE OPENS
Volleyball practice opens throughout Minnesota today. The final destination: The State Tournament at the Xcel Energy Center on November 8-10. Head volleyball coaches are to attend a rules interpretation meeting. Here is a list of meeting sites that still are to come. Go to page two.

HARMS MOVING??
Katherine Harms (who has made a verbal to the U of MN class of 2009) was seen playing with St. Michael-Albertville on Saturday at the captain's tournament at Ralia. Harms played with Little Falls previously.
According to sources the family is closing on a house in STMA on Monday.

Natalie Thomas, Champlin Park has verballed Concordia-St. Paul. Thomas is a 5-7 setter and played with MN Select 17-1 in the Junior Olympic season. She is the 13th player from 2008 to verbal and the 5th to verbal D2.

NORTHERN SUN PRE-SEASON PICKS
Concordia St. Paul has been selected by the coaches to win the Northern Sun volleyball championship this year. Southwest MN State's Erin Contons was selected pre-season player of the year. There are 5 pages worth of information in the NSIC press release.
CSP opens the season hosting the Ramada Inn Classic on August 24 with three teams that finished in the top six last year.

UM DULUTH READY

Peru Sweeps Americans

PERU SWEEPS YOUTH NATIONAL TEAM
Peru swept the USA Youth National Team in the Youth National World Volleyball championships but the margin in each game was only two points. The Americans have a game left against the host Mexicans. Kelsey Brandl of Lakeville North played in third game, but did not score.

POWER LUNCH
North Dakota State will host a power lunch on the 13th. There are five Minnesota players on the Bison roster plus seven freshmen.
