Carlson served out the game with two hitting errors by Wayzata.

Game two had the Wayzata imprint on it. They led early at 3-1 and maintained that two point margin, more or less, until the game was at 20-18. Neither team had any sizeable runs as each team was siding out at a good clip. Andover's 19th point came on a sideout back row attack by Carlson. A Wayzata hitting error tied the game. Wayzata sided out with a block by Ellis and Lauren Baufield. Andover got the ball back due to a Wayzata net violation. This side out went on until on Krista Erickson's serve Andover scored on a Wayzata passing error 23-22. Wayzata tied it on a slide kill by Gaffen. Carlson got the sideout for Andover, their 9th straight side out, on a kill from the middle. Andover took game two on another Wayzata hitting error.

Lauren Baufield came out possessed in game three with two straight kills and three in the first five points. She ended up with 8 kills in this game alone. Wayzata led 8-2 after Meghan Ellis' serve. Andover did take a time out at 8-1. The siding out that got Andover the victory in game two disappeared as they failed to get it done on the first three Wayzata serves. Wayzata led 19-8 on a three serve run by Dale before the side out game returned. Wayzata won point 25 on a passing error by Andover.

Andover had a mirror reversal in the fourth game jumping to the early lead at 7-0. Wayzata took a timeout at 5-0, but Heidi Larson was able to get two more points from her serve. The Andover side out strength reasserted itself with six straight. By the time Wayzata was able to score again from their own serve it was 17-7. On Erickson's serve Andover led 23-11. Parks for Wayzata did manage to get three points off her serve, but Carlson ended that with a kill to make it 24-14. A missed serve gave it back to Wayzata, and Ewert ended the night with a kill from the middle. It was the first earned point to finish a game tonight.

Wayzata 27/40--.675, 84, .607; .356
This was the best rally side out game I have seen this fall. Andover's .850 was solid. And Wayzata's .675 would be great in most of the games I have seen. Shakopee last night was at .677.

Here is the Andover point production by Rotation

DGF BEATS MOORHEAD
Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton (#1 AA) beat larger neighbor Moorhead for the first time on Monday in five, but the trailed 2-0 before getting the job done. The final game went 15-13.

AWARDS
I think they might want to call the Setter award in the North Central Conference the Gangelhoff award as UM Duluth setter Katie Gangelhoff won it for the fourth time in a row for last week. She did have to share with the honor with Sierra Novak of St. Cloud State. Gangelhoff's teammate Vicky Braegelmann also picked up an offensive award her third honor this year. St. Cloud State's Kristi Pangrac shared the honor with Braegelmann. Blythe Johnson of Augustana did not share the defensive award.

Wayne State took top awards this week in the Northern Sun. Emily Schroeder (offense) and Laura Dolezal and Brittany Coleman (setter) all won the big three awards. Maggie McNamara, Concordia St. Paul (setter) was the only non Wayne Stater to crack the lineup sharing the setting award with Coleman.

In the MIAC Becca Shane of Concordia Moorhead took the offensive award and Janet Sully for St. Olaf won the defensive award.

Out & About: Shakopee/Hopkins

#2 posting 9.18.2006
your daily dose of girls volleyball news & information

SHAKOPEE 3, HOPKINS 0

In a non conference match up Shakopee swept host Hopkins 17, 11, 15.

Shakopee started off on the right foot with four service points from Kaitlin O'Brien. Hopkins did close to 6-5 with a pair of kills by Cali Carnahan and #12 (Alex Luther?). Once Shakopee sided out they added four points off Jessica Menden's serve including two aces. After the second ace Hopkins took a time out. They did side out and scored one point on a Emily Foster dump. But Hopkins did not get side outs, while Shakopee did close the door. Hopkins burned another time out at 20-10 after a bump kill that the Hopkins defense didn't cover. They got the ball back on a rotation call, one of three for Shakopee on the night. On Emily Anderson's serve for Hopkins they closed to 22-16. A net violation gave the ball back to Shako and Maggie Geske put down an ace before serving into the net. O'Brien finished game one with a kill from the right side.

Shako took control early in game two and rode that momentum to the win. After the third Shako server the Sabers were up 9-4. Hopkins took their first time at 13-7 after a push kill error by Foster. They got the ball back on the Brittney Schroers missed serve. Mollie Geske took Shako to 16-9 and older sister Maggie served out the game with seven straight points including three aces. Maggie had five kills in this game.

In game three Shakopee again took control early after Mollie's serve the Sabers led 6-4. The game remained close during this stretch with Shakopee up 12-11 after another rotation call on Megan Theis' serve. Shakopee closed the game with a 13-4 run on the strength of Mollie Geske, Jessica Menden, and Maggie Geske's serve. Hopkins never was able to get the first ball side out.

your daily dose of girls volleyball news & information

Chaska swept Moorhead behind Allie Oelke's 22 kills 22, 11, 22. This game and others in the Fargo/Moorhead area in the Fargo Forum.

HS Tournament Recaps
Rogers finished 2-2 in the Sauk Rapids Tournament. They opened with a 3 game win over Dassel-Cokato, and then lost to the hosts in two. St. Cloud Cathedral did the same two & out. Rogers finished the day with a three game win over Mora. From the Elk River Star News.

St. Cloud Cathedral won the Sauk Rapids tournament beating the hosts in the championship game. You will need to scroll down the HS recap section of the St. Cloud Times, but you will find team stats for the St. Cloud area schools. You will also get info on the Big Lake and North Branch tourneys.

I know people are breathlessly awaiting the SPA tourney results.

Well I got to Mpls Henry about 6:35 to wait for a 7 am bus to take us to the game. Unfortunately the bus was at SPA waiting to take us to Henry. Somewhere the bus folks got the wires crossed. We had an 8 am game against SPA. We get there at 8:20 and they tell us we had to forfeit the first game "to keep on schedule." So my players had to pay for the sins of the bus company and SPA got a pass. We could have played the games since it was only a two game max anyway. In the "second" game Henry led 9-5 early on, SPA took their first lead at 10-9. They continued to build on that lead and led by five at 20-15 and led 24-19 when they missed their serve. Wendy Vang served up three points all scored on SPA hitting errors to make the score 24-23, but Xylina Yang didn't control the ball and SPA escaped with the "match" with a 2-0 win at 25-23. Both teams had 1st ball sideout numbers at .417.

Henry faced Fridley in the pool next and Fridley led 5-2 early. Henry hung around with a 15-12 Fridley advantage when Fridley went on a 10-3 run to finish game one. Henry only picked up three points off their serve. Game two was all Fridley as they raced to an 8-0 lead on Caitlin McKernon's serve. For the match Fridley had FBSO at .737 and Henry .494.

Trinity was the next pool opponent and Henry picked up their only win with a 12, 15 sweep. Trinity led in game one 6-4 when Kiah Hanssen-Kilpatrick stepped to the service line. When she stepped away Henry Led 18-6. She serve up 14 points, 9 on aces as Trinity was having receiving issues. In game two Trinity led 13-11 before Carrie Moua and Wendy Vang had runs of 5 and 7 to finish the match. Henry had FBSO at .500, Trinity .462.

That set up a 5th place match with St. Anthony from pool B. StA had no real problems in game one as they jumped to a 6-0 lead. That set the tone for the rest of the game and StA won 25-9. In game two Henry led as late as 12-10. But rotation 6 gave up the lead 14-13. Henry trailed 19-17 after a Matha Her ace, but a kill from the right stopped her serve and the Patriots never got the ball back. FBSO had StA at .529, and Henry a miserable .167.

D1 WRAP
I have already told you folks about the Gopher game last night. Now for the rest of the action with MN players.

Wisconsin, a big 10 rival lost to unranked UC Santa Barbara on Friday in five games in the U of San Diego tournament. Wisconsin held a 2-1 advantage, but failed to close the deal. Their next contest went according to script with a sweep of Ivy League Brown. Wisconsin coach Pete Waite picked up career win 450 in beating host San Diego in four. It also happened to be the championship match.

UConn split their remaining games at the Diet Coke Classic, losing to Dayton in four and then sweeping Tulane to close the tournament.

Former Hills-Beaver Creek, MN player Erin Boeve had 17 kills in a Iowa State sweep over Baylor. Boeve also had 2 blocks and 7 assists for the match. It was the Big 12 opener for both.

Marquette beat Stony Brook in five to close out its tournament. They lost the first two games to SB and came back with three in a row. The beat Manitoba in an exhibition, and lost to San Francisco 3-1 to open the tournament.

Northern Iowa Swept Bradley 3-0 to open Missouri Valley conference action.

North Dakota State traveled to the South Dakota State Jackrabbitt Invitational. They opened with a sweep over UM Kansas City. They then beat Lamar to push their win streak to four games. That streak came to a halt with New Mexico State's sweep of the Bison 28, 18, 17. Sheila Parrish made the all tournament team.

Host South Dakota State also was swept by NM State 9, 16, 25. They also won a pair on Saturday UMKC (3-1 win) and Lamar (3-0 win). It was coach Andrew Palileo's 200th win.

Out & About: Minnesota/Dayton

#1 posting 9.16.2006
your daily dose of girls volleyball news & information

MINNESOTA 3, DAYTON 0

I was able to attend the last game today in the Diet Coke Classic, I was at the St. Paul Academy tournament this afternoon. More on that in a later post. The Gophers came out of the DCC without a loss of a game sweeping Dayton 18, 24, 20.

Again I am not going to give a rehash, but give some information that isn't normally given. I charted every touch by the Gophers today,
First off First ball side out
Team, G1, G2, G3 Totals

MN .692; .823; .643---32/44--.727
Dayton .385; .529, .429---20/44---.455
As you can see ball control & finishing belonged to the Gophers.
How about which rotation was the best? I will use the service order used by the Gophers; for example Rotation 1-Peniata. How many points did that rotation produce, how many did they give up?
Rotation #, Name of server, points scored-allowed, margin
1. Peniata 26-14 +12
2. Bowman 14-9 +5
3. Crumpston 10-10 0
4. Nelson/Wilber 15-11 +4
5. Hartmann 11-9 +2
6. Tan 14-9 +5
As you can see #3 did not have a + margin. Rotations 2, and 5 did not side out once for the night. Rotation 2 was 6/7 in first ball side out, Rotation 5 was 5/6.

Right now Bowman and Peniata have the best passing skills, whether it was in receiving or defense. Missing these two in the first few tournaments obviously impacted performance. Tan, as a freshman is still learning the pace and speed of the collegiate game. She was caught out of position a couple times tonight.

Of course you can read all about the Dayton game, and even the Tulane game.

Next up: tomorrow at some point to rehash all the Collegiate action and HS tournaments.
