COLLEGE GAME REPORTS
SW MN State swept St. Cloud State 21, 26, 22. The hitting combination of Megan Wendorff and Erin Contons for SW MN State proved to much to handle. They combined for 30 kills. more from the Marshall Independent. Wendorff was named D2 national player of the week.
Regis swept UM Crookston with the most compelling game #2 32-30.

Albert Lea won their first game for new coach Melissa Wasmoen over Southland 26-24, 23, 19. From the Albert Lea Tribune.
Fillmore Central beat Lanesboro 3-1 last Friday, but the story can now be told via the Republican Leader

Last year Winona State volleyball coach Connie Mettille was involved in a car a very serious car accident. She was hospitalized for 19 days. Yesterday Benjamin Douglass, the individual that provided alcohol to the driver was sentenced to two years probation. Here is more from the Winona Daily News.

Here are a few more game reports from last night.

Nicollet led in game four 24-16 over MN Valley Lutheran, but MVL's Gina Meyer served 8 straight points to tie it up at 24. They eventually won that game and the match 30-28. more from the NU Journal.

Pine River-Backus and Verndale won and are featured in the Brainerd Dispatch. However I am a bit of doubting Thomas on the report of 33 blocks for one player and 46 digs for another player in the Verndale contest. I will not be putting those numbers in my number crunch section.

Bemidji lost the first and fourth games to Detroit Lakes but prevailed in the deciding fifth game 15-10. More from the Bemdiji Pioneer.

International Falls also lost the first game to Mountain Iron-Buhl, but they won the next three. More from the IF Daily Journal.

Littlefork-Big Falls swept Cherry 14, 15, 14. more in the IF Daily Journal.

Cannon Falls edged Red Wing in five with the deciding game 15-13. CF won the first two, but RW came back for 3 & 4. Report from the Red Wing Republican Eagle.

Jackson County Central swept SW Star, but the games were tight 25-23, 25-21, 31-29. More in the Worthington Daily Globe.

Bigger MACCRAY used their advantage to a tight sweep against Buffalo Lake-Hector 25-23, 25-15, 29-27. Story in the West Central Tribune.

KMS beat Benson in three 19, 22, 23 & Central Christian, led by Kresson Vreeman's 14 aces had no problems with McLeod West 8, 9, 8. More from the WCT.

HS WRAP UPS
Fergus Falls, Wheaton, Ashby all posted sweeps last night. Article from the Fergus Falls Daily Journal.
Mabel-Canton picked up conference win 73 in a row, and Kasson-Mantorville went five games with Plainview-Elgin-Millville in Southeast MN action. Article from the Winona Daily News.
St. Charles swept Winona Cotter in somewhat of a surprise 11, 20, 20. From the Winona Daily News.
Blue Earth swept past Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 27-25, 17, 22. The key game was #1. BE led 19-10, but LCWM came back strong. More in the Mankato Free Press.
Moorhead swept Perham 9, 15, 17. The Spuds return most of their team from last year. Story from the Fargo Forum.
Redwood Valley beat Lakeview in four, and Megan Groen of Renville County West unleased 15 kills in a win over Lincoln HI. Story from the West Central Tribune.
Pierz knocked off Little Falls in four. Pay no attention to the St. Cloud Times headline--it is backword. BBE also won yesterday.
Marshall got stronger as the match wore on against Alexandria in a 15, 11, 7 sweep.

All the #1 teams swept, AAA Chaska 10, 14, 10 with Prior Lake; and A Minneota 18, 20, 12 with Murray County Central. No word on AA Stewartville at Decorah Iowa.

COLLEGE REPORTS
UM Crookston spoiled Chadron State's home opener with a sweep 36-34, 33-31, and a more comfortable 30-20. UMC was down 25-22 in the first game, and trailed 26-23 in the second before making comeback wins. Here is more from the Crookston Times.

Winona State had a record crowd in it's home opener Tuesday night against Viterbo. And the crowd left happy as WSU swept Viterbo 27, 19, 12. Article from the Winona Daily News.

HEBERT & PARKINSON'S
Gopher coach Mike Hebert has had Parkinson's disease since 2004, but has recently made the news public. Here is Patrick Reusse's column in the Star Tribune about the coach, the disease, and former Gopher and it looks like future Olympian Cassie Busse. I think everyone in the volleyball community wishes coach Hebert the best on the battle with Parkinson's

OSSEO 3, DE LA SALLE 0

Osseo swept DeLaSalle in convincing fashion 8-11-14.

In game one Osseo jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Amanda Hoefling's serve. They added three more on Rachel Wiinanen's three jump aces in rotation two. Brianna Olson added two more aces in rotation 3 and Osseo was up 10-3. Casey Carroll served six straight points with two aces and Osseo pushed the lead to 17-4. Osseo's domination was evident in the side out % with 6/7, or 4/5 if you discount missed serves. DeLaSalle missed two of their first four serves, which did not help matters. Jenny Oligmueller had three kills in this game for the Orioles. Wiinanen had a kill to make it 25-8. DeLaSalle side out % was 2/7 .286.

Osseo started to pull away in rotation three with two aces by Olson to make it 5-2. The ace total would end up at nine in this game. Mackenzie Gangestad provided Osseo with the best service run in game two with five points. She also had two service aces. When she was done with her serve it was 11-4. Melissa Henderson ripped off four kills in this game for the Orioles. Osseo's side out % was .571 in game two, DLS was at .143. Both had 7 servers.

Osseo trailed for only the second time all night (they were down 1-0 in game two) at 3-2. Olson served up six points to break the game open at 11-4. She had two aces, including one after a DLS time out. Amanda Dalton took part in two blocks during this run. Osseo went deep into the bench toward the end of this game. Late in the game Osseo Libero made an excellent save on a second ball as she ran toward the exits. Eventually the Orioles got the point. DLS side out % was .400 in 10 serves, and Osseo .700 but if you discount missed serves it stood at .571 in 7 serves.

Osseo was aces in their receiving & serving, put the ball down better, and had a stronger side out game. For the game the side out % was .632 for Osseo, .292 for DeLaSalle.

Rogers Wins, Big Previews

GAME REPORTS
Rogers spent all 2005 regular season winless. They solved that problem last night with a 3-0 win over district rival Zimmerman. Erica Sudduth led Rogers with 8 kills. Story from the Elk River Star News.

Pierz, as has been reported before, beat Willmar 3-1. We read about it in the West Central Tribune, now it is the Brainerd Dispartch's turn.

Rushford-Peterson and Byron won yesterday and are featured in the Winona Daily News.

BOLD had no problems with Sleepy Eye in a sweep. From the West Central Tribune.

St. Paul Humboldt beat Minneapolis Patrick Henry 3-0 last night. Henry led throughout the first game except when it counted. Henry led 23-20 with Stephanie Zappa serving. Humboldt forced the side out, and Henry couldn't as Jevita Baheriy served four points, with 3 coming on Henry hitting errors. Humboldt didn't have too many problems in the second game at 25-14. Key point was an 11-2 diffenrential in the third rotation. Humboldt led 5-4 in the 3rd game and it never trailed again in a 25-18 win. Zappa had 7 aces for Henry.

UM Duluth Undefeated in Northern Michigan

WEEKEND WRAPS

UM Duluth won both games Saturday against Abilene Christian and Lake Superior State in the Northern Michigan Tournament.

We already talked about the SW MN State split on Saturday in Florida, but the Marshall Independent does not publish on Sunday. So here is more on the SW MN State win against Texas Women's and loss to Florida Southern.

Winona State split this weekend in the Ferris tournament in Michigan. On Friday Winona State lost to Augustana 3-0, and then beat Texas A&M Kingsville 3-1. On Saturday WSU lost to Saginaw Valley State 3-2, and beat St. Joseph's, IN 3-0. At the conclusion of the tournament setter Lisa Dobie was named all tournament.

Ridgewater finished 1-2 in the DuPage IL tournament.

The Duluth News Tribune previews the entire coverage area including 7AAA rivals Hibbing, with Coach Gail Nucech's 751 wins and Hermanatown with new coach Sue Wasbotten, 7AA rivals Carlton and Esko, and wide open 7A.

COACHES

The Grand Forks Herald takes a look at the schools on the East side of the Red River. Lake of the Woods is featured, along with their Manitoban--Nicole Olson.

OSSEO
This years team will be lead by a strong senior group that includes two 3 year starters. In total Osseo returns 9 players with varsity experience with a total 17 varsity letteer coming into this season. Senior captain Melissa Henderson (5'10" OH) will be expected to carry a big chunk of the offensive load. Melissa was a 2005 NWSC All-Conference player. Senior captain Jenny Oligmueller (6'1" Opp) will add to the offensive attack from the right side. Senior Captain Mackenzie Gangestad (5'5" Setter) will be expected to help guide the 6-2 offense with the help of Amanda Hoefling (5'8" Soph Setter). Other expected to contribute are senior DS Brittany Fish, Senior MH Amanda Dalton (5'10"), Junior Libero Brianna Olson, Junior Opposite Casey Carroll (6'1"), Junior MH Tia Russell (5'11"), Sophomore OH Rachel Wiinanen (5'9"), and Sophomore DS Rachel Pekarek.

Osseo's non-conference schedule includes #7A Meadow Creek, #7AA Mayer Lutheran, and Wayzata. Their season opener is Tuesday August 29th when they host the Islanders from DeLaSalle. Osseo is participating in their own tournament on Sept 9th that includes Armstrong, Mayo, STMA, Jefferson, South, DeLaSalle, Johnson, and Henry. They will be traveling to the Apple Valley Invitational on Oct 13-14 and to the Moorhead Pumpkin Classic on MEA weekend.

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN'
Osseo visited Leigh HS in San Jose for 3 full days Aug 21-23.
On day 1 Osseo had a 3 hour practice followed up with 2 hours of sand volleyball after a fantastic dinner at Fresh Choice. It was a long day after finally getting back to the hotel at 3am California time.
Day 2 saw the Orioles with 3.5 hour practice/scrimmage followed by a road trip to Santa Cruz. In Santa Cruz numerous players saw and touched the ocean for the first time! As normal high school girls do they shopped for hours on the Santa Cruz Pier and at the Boardwalk. On the way back to the hotel we stopped at Pizza my Heart for dinner in the town of Los Gatos (it had an Edina type of feel to it). It was also home to a huge candy and gelato store.
On the final day there was another 3.5 hour practice and scrimmage followed by a trip to San Francisco. The team toured Pier 39. We saw the famous Sea Lions and Alcatraz and a lot of fog. Dinner at the SF Hard Rock Cafe was followed by a short trek to the Golden Gate Bridge. The girls said their tearful good byes to Coach Chen, a former assistant at Osseo, before heading to the airport for their 12:20am flight. Goal Setting homework was assigned while we were waiting for the flight.

We would just like to say thank you again to the Leigh Volleyball team for their hospitality.

DI NEWS & RESULTS
North Dakota State lost their first two games at the Jackrabbitt Kickoff in Brookings. NDSU picked up their first win of the year against Gonzaga in five. They were beat by Weber State in their other Saturday game. At the conclusion of the tournament Christy Stuewe was named to the all tournament team. Stuewe played her HS ball at Mayer Lutheran.

The Minnesota Gophers swept past their ex-mates 3-0. Kyla Roehrig had 12 kills for the current crop of Gophers.

VOLLEYBALL DESERVES MORE
Here is an article by Rob Schultz in the Capital Times in Madison Wisconsin about how volleyball is the Rodney Dangerfield of sports. Wisconsin lost their opener to Texas 3-0. It took 5 games, but Wisconsin beat Ohio in the consolation finals.

D2 NEWS & RESULTS
CONCORDIA ST. PAUL UNDEFEATED
CSPU won the Nova Southeastern tournament with an unblemished 4-0 record. They opened with a sweep of Truman State. They then swept Barry. Concordia then won two more on Saturday with another sweep, this time Fort Hays State, and they a 3-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast.

SW MN State swept Texas Women's University in three, but then were swept by the hosts Florida Southern. More from the SWMN press releases.

MSU Moorhead's Tammy Blake-Kath picked up career win 200 in a 3-0 win over Southwest Baptist in the Missouri Southern tournament. MSU Moorhead finished 3-1 in the event. Their only loss was to NW Missouri State 3-1.

MN State Mankato finished 3-1 in the Nova Southeastern Tournament. They won twice on Friday, but lost to Central Oklahoma on Saturday in four before coming back to beat the hosts in a five match marathon 3-2. Here is more details from the MSU Mankato Press relase.

St. Cloud State split two games on Saturday in the Northern Michigan Tournament. They beat Lake Superior State 3-0, but then lost to Abilene Christian after leading 2-0.

Bemidji State went 1-3 down in West Texas A&M. They lost to the hosts in 3 on Saturday. They beat New Mexico Highlands 3-0 to finish the tournament.

North Dakota went 1-3 also at the Nebraska Kearney tournament. They opened with a 3-0 loss to Rockhurst. They also were swept by the hosts. The brooms were out once again as they lost to Wayne State, Nebraska in the first game Saturday. They finished the tournament with a sweep of their own over Iowa Wesleyan.

JUCO NEWS & RESULTS
Central Lakes went all the way to Illinois to beat Ridgewater 3-0 in the first round of the DuPage Tournament. Last year Ridgewater beat Central Lakes in the state semifinals. Here is more from the Brainerd Dispatch

SW MN STATE TOPS #1 GRAND VALLEY STATE
Southwest MN State beat the #1 team & defending DII National Champs Grand Valley State in five games, but they did it down 2-0. SW MN State also beat Angelo State 3-0. The Marshall Independent has more on the Florida Southern tournament. SW MN State also has a press release.

UM DULTH WINS TWICE
DII #5 UM Duluth had two 3-0 wins yesterday in the Northern Michigan Tournament. They beat Emporia State and UW Parkside. The brief information is found in the Duluth News Tribune.
St. Cloud State split in the same tournament. They lost to Northern Michigan 3-1, but beat Michigan Tech 3-1.

Bemidji State lost to Harding University 3-0 in the Lady Buff Classic in Canyon, Texas. More from the Bemidji Pioneer.

GOPHERS TO FACE ALUMNI
Tonight the Gophers will play ex-Gophers in an alumni game. It is free and open to the public. The match starts at 7 pm.

ALBANY EARLY BIRD

TORNADOES AND GAMES
Red Wing survived a tornado warning and then beat Rochester Century on Thursday in five games. Red Wing’s Anne Betcher had 15 kills, 4 aces, and 2 blocks on the night. Here is the Red Wing Republican-Eagle's report.

There were a couple of games up in the Arrowhead region. Reports are from the Duluth News Tribune.
Kelly Hams, Littlefork-Big Falls had 25 assists, and Whitney Junker had 10 kills in a 3-0 win over Tower-Soudan. This was a 7A title game rematch from last year. Here is a preview of LFBF from the International Falls Daily Journal.

Virginia’s Caitlin Stackpool had a double double with 24 assists, and 11 digs in a 3-0 win over Two Harbors. Jessa Youso added 12 digs as well.

Owatonna got a measure of revenge in a 3-0 win over New Prague. New Prague beat them last year in sections.

MACCRAY lost the first game to Yellow Medicine East, but then won the next 3. Kari Caspers led MACCRAY with 13 kills. Kristina Keitzmann had 14 kills for YME. Story is from the West Central Tribune.

Anoka, who happen to be the Tornadoes, swept Hopkins 3-0.

BIG 10 TEAMS OPEN THIS WEEK
Here is the weekly press release in pdf form from the Big 10 conference. Five schools are in the top 25 including #2 Penn State. Minnesota is #22.
All teams except Minnesota and Northwestern, will start play this weekend. Illinois, Iowa, Purdue and Wisconsin host tournaments this weekend with #9 Wisconsin taking on #8 Texas Friday night.
Indiana is at West Virginia, Ohio State at Towson, Michigan is at Toledo, Michigan State at Ball State, and Penn State is at LSU.

In the first AVCA DII poll of the year Concordia St. Paul is at the fourth position, and UM Duluth is at #5. Grand Valley State, last year's DII champ is in first. Concordia St. Paul opens up their season in Tampa in the Nova Southeastern tournament. Minnesota State is also there. UM Duluth opens the season in the Northern Michigan Tournament this weekend. GOPHER HIGH EXPECTATIONS
The Minnesota Gophers returned from Europe optimistic on the upcoming season. The Gophers return five starters including preseason Big 10 first team players Kelly Bowman, Jessy Jones, and Meredith Nelson. Here is the StarTribune's take on the season ahead.

Minnesota #3 in Big 10 Poll

GOPHERS PICKED 3RD
The Minnesota Gophers have been tabbed by the Big 10 conference coaches to finish third. Penn State is in the top spot, while Wisconsin is slated for second. Seniors Kelly Bowman, and Meredith Nelson and Junior Jesse Jones have been selected to the preseason Big 10 team. More from the Big 10 press release.

OSSEO TRIP
Coach Bill Quan will take his squad out to California to visit former assistant Anthoy Chen. Chen is the coach at Leigh HS in San Jose. Last year Leigh had one player sign with a DI school Santa Clara. Osseo will stay there for three days.

MICHIGAN SEASONS
I normally don't report on other states, but I thought this might be of interest.
The Muskegon Chronicle is not in favor of the switch of the basketball and volleyball seasons. Right now volleyball is a winter sport. A court ordered Michigan to switch the two seasons for the 2007 season. The winter season collides with the JO season. Apparently the lawsuit started with volleyball parents complaining about the lack of time for JO season. The Dowagiac Daily News chimes in on the change of seasons.

JUCO VOLLEYBALL
JUCO sports in general don't get a lot of attention. We hope to fix that.
Central Lakes practices are underway. Their first contest is August 25/26 at the College of DuPage, IL tournament. Article is from the Brainerd Dispatch.
MN STC (Fergus Falls) is holding a car wash for a trip this fall to Dallas Texas September 22-24. Here are more details in the Fergus Falls Daily Journal.

ST. CLOUD STATE

MSU MANKATO
Here is the preseason prospectus for the MSU Mankato Mavericks. Coach Dennis Amundson begins his second year. 2005 freshman of the year Ashley Nachreiner is now a sophomore and more big things are expected from her. LYLE-PACELLI
Here is a story about the Lyle-Pacelli team in the Austin Daily Herald. They have a new coach in Carl Ellis. The main competition for LP will be Mabel-Canton in the Southeast conference.

Two new head coaches have some personal connections. John Yunker at St. Michael-Albertville was my assistant at Osseo from 1996-98; and Jill Kalvik at Minneapolis Roosevelt was my assistant at Minneapolis Henry in 2004-2005. They join Bill Quan, current Osseo coach as assistants that have graduated to head coaches.

COACHING CHANGES
Here is a list of coaching changes in the metro area as told by the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Kennedy is getting a transfer too as well as a new coach (Kari Raymond) in player Brook Dieter from Bethany. As usual, the Lake conference has a plethora of teams near the top spot in the polls. #1 is Chaska but there are four others in the top 7. The same article details the rankings too.

DULUTH PICKED IN NCC
UM Duluth has been selected as favorites to win their third NCC title in a row according to conference coaches. If you want to read the NCC release, here it is.

LUCIA
Concordia St. Paul's Jessica Lucia (Wayzata HS) has a write up in the StarTribune. The preseason player of the year in the Northern Sun credits teammates and coaches for her success.

NOMINATING DEADLINES
For MN HS coaches the deadline for nominating your player for All State awards is September 15. Go to the MN Volleyball Coaches Association and look under Files & Documents.First you need to be a member of the MVBCA for your players to be considered for these awards.

For Academic awards you need to have the paperwork done by October 23.

The MVBCA is also looking for nominations for the Hall of Fame. To see who has been given the award check on the Coaches Awards at the MVBCA site.

OPENING DAY
Today in gyms across Minnesota the volleyball season got underway with official practice.

I can tell you that Mpls Henry had 20 players show up at 7 am. Stefanie Zappa is a senior setter that has been All city for the last two seasons. She is the only all conference player returning this year in the entire city.

NOMINATING DEADLINES

Wayzata Profile, Baufield to ETSU

WAYZATA TEAM PROFILED
Wayzata will be a senior-dominated team and will be led by Lauren Baufield, a 5’10” senior right-side hitter. Lauren is a team captain that recently verbally committed to Division 1 East Tennessee State University. She is a 2005 Classic Lake Conference All-Conference selection and played on MN Select 17-1.

As many as five additional seniors are also seeking to have impactful final high school seasons and make the transition to collegiate volleyball. These other seniors are setter and captain Holly Dale, libero Julie Droegemueller, middle hitter Meghan Ellis, outside hitter and 2005 Classic Lake Conference All-Conference selection Jessie Lasher, and outside hitter and captain Hannah Parks.

The team’s other middle hitter is 6’2” sophomore Tia Gaffen who has already gained interest from the likes of the University of Minnesota, USC, Wisconsin, and Georgia Tech.

Fitzgerald to UM Crookston

COACHING NEWS
UM Crookston has hired Amanda Neubauer as assistant coach. The Admissions counselor arrived on campus in June. She played volleyball at Butler CC in Kansas. The last couple of years she was a grad assistant at North Dakota. Here is the Crookston Times with more details.

GOPHERS ON TV
The Minnesota Gophers will be on TV three times this season. The scheduled games are Oct 6 at Penn State; Home against Purdue on Oct 14; and home against Ohio State on Oct 27. These games will be on tape delay. Find out more in the MN press release.

HS PREVIEWS
Even though the HS season doesn't officially begin until Monday some papers are already running previews of their teams.

Last December Winona State head volleyball coach Connie Mettille was severly injured in a car crash. Katelyn Carol Appelwick has pleaded not guilty to 10 charges. Read more in the Winona Daily News.
