Five Big 10 Tournament Champs

BIG 10 NEWS
Five Big 10 teams won tournaments this weekend, with one more tournament a possibility. Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Purdue, and Wisconsin all won tournaments.

#16 Minnesota Gophers won the Bluejay Invitational in Omaha with two wins on Saturday. First the Gophers beat Texas A&M in four. The Gophers swept #21 LSU 11-21-22 in the finale. Kyla Roehrig (Papillion LaVista, NE) had 21 points in the Texas A&M match. Brook Dieter (Bloomington Kennedy) had 16 points in the LSU match.

Illinois won their own tournament beating #23 New Mexico State in four, and then topping #11 Oregon in five. Oregon led 2-0 in that match. Laura DeBruhler had 22 points against New Mexico State and 33 points against Oregon.

Michigan won the Rice tournament with a sweep UT San Antonio and then a sweep over host Rice. The Wolverine's Beth Karpiak had 13 points vs UTSA, and Megan Bower had 17 points vs Rice.

Purdue won their own tournament on Saturday. They first beat Tennessee State in a sweep. Boilermaker coach Dave Shondell picked up his 100th win. Danita Marleau had 16.5 points for Purdue in the TSU match. Purdue beat #14 Kansas State 3-1 in the championship. Stephanie Lynch had 18.5 points for Purdue vs KSU.

Wisconsin won the Kentucky Tournament with a sweep over Pittsburgh and a sweep of host Kentucky. MVP Brittney Dolgner had 18.5 points vs Pittsburgh. Katherine Dystra had 15.5 points in the Kentucky win. Nikki Klingsporn (Tartan) had 18 assists vs Pittsburgh and 16 assists against Kentucky.

In Hawaii Penn State beat #6 UCLA in a sweep. Christa Harmotto had 15.5 points for PSU in the win.

At Long Beach State Indiana lost to Missouri State 3-1. Erica Short had 29 points for the Hoosiers in the loss. Indiana closed out the tournament with a sweep of San Francisco. Kelsey Hall had 16 in the win.

At the Alabama tournament Iowa lost to Kentucky Western in four. Catherine Smale had 21.5 points for the Hawkeyes. Iowa also lost to the host Crimson Tide in four. Megan Schipper provided 19 points for Iowa in that match.

At Oklahoma Michigan State lost their third match of the year 3-1 to Wichita State. Jenilee Rathje had 21 points for the Spartans.

In the Chicagoland Classic Northwestern lost to Loyola Chicago 3-1. Sabel Moffett had 16 points for NW.

In their own tournament Ohio State swept Youngstown State. Kaila Calhoun had 15.5 points for OSU. Susan Halvorson (Apple Valley) had 8 digs and 8 receptions without error for OSU.
