Big 10 Wins Eight Tournaments

MINNESOTA SPLITS

The #12 Gophers swept Utah State, but #15 California Bears pulled an upset with a sweep of the Gophers. Minnesota MHs Jessy Jones and Lauren Gibbemeyer were named to the all tournament team.


OTHER BIG 10 NEWS

8 Big Ten teams won tournaments this weekend. Michigan won their event on Friday.


Illinois won their own tournament with a four game win over Creighton. Illini Vicky Brown was named MVP. Chaska's Allie Oelke had 11 kills for Creighton.


Indiana won the Valparaiso tournament with four game win over Western Michigan. Taylor Wittmer and Kelsey Hall were all tournament. Wittmer, a freshman, was MVP.


Michigan State won the Harvard tournament beating the hosts in four. Jenilee Rathje set a Big 10 freshman record with 11 blocks in a match.


Northwestern won the Georgetown tournament beating Towson 3-0 in the championship. Kate Nobilio had 31 digs to set a new NW record.


#3 Penn State won their own tournament with a sweep of VCU.


Purdue beat host Clemson in five to win that tournament. Purdue's Danita Merlau had 20/20 games with kills/digs.


#10 Wisconsin slipped by host Loyola Marymount to win that tournament.


Iowa pushed #21 LSU to five games before falling.


OTHER D1 ACTION

The Gophers next opponent Charlotte won their own tournament with a five game win over UNC Greensboro.


UConn lost for the first time this year with a long four game match with St. Louis. The fourth game was 37-35. Bridget Denson-Dorman of Hopkins had 44 assists for UConn.


Denver lost to TCU in five in the TCU tournament. Kresson Vreeman of Central Christian had 7 aces for Denver.


Iowa State won the mythological Iowa championship by defeating Drake in Des Moines. Earlier in the day ISU swept Iowa. Erin Boeve of Hills-Beaver Creek had 13 kills in the Iowa game for Iowa State.


North Dakota State swept Elon and beat McNeese State in four in the Illinois Chicago tournament.

Northern Iowa swept Fresno State at the Kansas State tournament. Ashten Stelken and Shannon Aschoff were named to the all tournament team for UNI.


Ohio bounced back from a loss to Alabama with a sweep over the College of Charleston in the Notre Dame tournament.


Providence swept host Quinnipiac. Sarah Fleming of Cretin-Derham Hall had 7 kills for Providence.


San Diego won their own tournament by beating Oklahoma in four. Laurel Abrahamson of Bloomington Jefferson pounded a career high 25 kills for USD. Abrahamson and Andrea Csaszi were named all tournament.

South Dakota State won their own tournament. They opened the day with a four game win over Montana followed by a 3-1 win over Long Island. Amy Anderson was named tourney MVP for SDSU.

Stony Brook split their games at Seton Hall.
