ANDOVER 3, WAYZATA 1

Andover beat Wayzata in a non conference match between two of the top teams in AAA. Andover took the first two games 25-21, 25-23, before stubbing their toe in game three 15-25. They quickly regained their form for a 25-15 win in game four.

In game one Andover broke a 5-5 tie with a side out and three points, including two aces, on Krista Erickson's serve to make it 9-6. Sarah Kurtovich served up two points to make it 12-6 when Wayzata need to talk about it. They got the side out on Tia Gaffen's kill. This started a 7-1 run by Wayzata that tied the game at 13. Andover again reclaimed the lead with a 5-1 run puncuated by Amy Olson's ace. But Wayzata went on a 6-2 run to tie it at 20. On point 20 Andover had a kill, but was caught in the net, the first of five on the night. Andover finished with a 5-1 run. Hannah Parks serve ended on a setting error. Kurtovich served point 22 with a block by Deena Ewert. Wayzata narrowed it to 22-21 with a dual block by Jessie Lasher and Tia Gaffen. Andover got the side out with an overpass kill by Megan Carlson. Carlson served out the game with two hitting errors by Wayzata.

Game two had the Wayzata imprint on it. They led early at 3-1 and maintained that two point margin, more or less, until the game was at 20-18. Neither team had any sizeable runs as each team was siding out at a good clip. Andover's 19th point came on a sideout back row attack by Carlson. A Wayzata hitting error tied the game. Wayzata sided out with a block by Ellis and Lauren Baufield. Andover got the ball back due to a Wayzata net violation. This side out went on until on Krista Erickson's serve Andover scored on a Wayzata passing error 23-22. Wayzata tied it on a slide kill by Gaffen. Carlson got the sideout for Andover, their 9th straight side out, on a kill from the middle. Andover took game two on another Wayzata hitting error.

Lauren Baufield came out possessed in game three with two straight kills and three in the first five points. She ended up with 8 kills in this game alone. Wayzata led 8-2 after Meghan Ellis' serve. Andover did take a time out at 8-1. The siding out that got Andover the victory in game two disappeared as they failed to get it done on the first three Wayzata serves. Wayzata led 19-8 on a three serve run by Dale before the side out game returned. Wayzata won point 25 on a passing error by Andover.

Andover had a mirror reversal in the fourth game jumping to the early lead at 7-0. Wayzata took a timeout at 5-0, but Heidi Larson was able to get two more points from her serve. The Andover side out strength reasserted itself with six straight. By the time Wayzata was able to score again from their own serve it was 17-7. On Erickson's serve Andover led 23-11. Parks for Wayzata did manage to get three points off her serve, but Carlson ended that with a kill to make it 24-14. A missed serve gave it back to Wayzata, and Ewert ended the night with a kill from the middle. It was the first earned point to finish a game tonight.

Team, First Ball Side Out, points scored, % points earned, % points allowed
Andover 34/40--.850, 90, .644; .393
Wayzata 27/40--.675, 84, .607; .356
This was the best rally side out game I have seen this fall. Andover's .850 was solid. And Wayzata's .675 would be great in most of the games I have seen. Shakopee last night was at .677.

Here is the Andover point production by Rotation
1 21-20 +1
2 13-11 +2
3 14-12 +2
4 18-17 +1
5 15-13 +2
6 8-12 -4
No one rotation ruled, but a consistent advantage, except for 6 who gave up four points in one serve in game one and another four in game three.

Here is the Wayzata point production by Rotation
1 15-19 -4
2 20-13 +7
3 11-14 -3
4 12-18 -6
5 16-17 -1
6 10-9 +1
Only two rotations in the positive zone for Wayzata. But rotation 2 was the best on the night for either team.
