EDEN PRAIRIE INVITATIONAL
Semifinals
Mayer Lutheran 2, Rosemount 0 (25-16, 25-23)

Unfortunately there were no programs available at the EPI. Three schools had their rosters on the MSHSL site, but Mayer Lutheran did not. What I used for numbers was their state tournament roster from 2005. Most kids pick the same numbers and it fits. If it is wrong let me know. Rosemount was the only #2 seed in a pool to make the Semis. They bested Minnetonka in the pool.

Mayer Lutheran grabbed a 5-0 lead right off the bat with #2 serving up two aces in the mix. On ML's second serve they tacked on two more points to go up 8-2. That was enough to take a Rosemount timeout. That timeout motivated the Irish to get the side out. Both teams exchanged two more side outs. Then Liz McKewon served up four points with two kills by Rosemount and two errors by ML. The 9-8 margin was as close as it was going to get for Rosemount. McKewon's serve ended when she served into the net. That gave ML some room to breathe. The game hung around 5-3 points when ML had a three point run on #7's serve. Rosemount tried to stop the momentum with a time out at 21-15, but there was no success as before. Sarah Stahlke ended the first game with a over pass kill out of the middle. ML sided out at .818, while Rosemount was only at .417.

The second game had many more twists and turns. ML led early 7-4, but the serving game for both teams became a bit erratic. There were five missed serves on the first 15 chances. ML led 12-7 when Rosemount burned a time out. 8 of the ML 12 points were due to Rosemount errors, three of which were missed serves. The time out turned the trick and #16 (not listed on the roster on the MSHL site because she is the Libero) got them back in the game at 12-11 the last point an ace. Stahlke stopped the service with a kill out of the middle to the right side of the floor. ML pushed the lead up to 19-15 before Rosemount reeled off five points on a side out and four services from Taylor Schuelke. The Irish took the lead at 20-19 when ML took a time. In the streak Paige Peterson had a kill and a block. After the time out ML forced Rosemount to make an error--Schuelke was in the net. A side out gave the lead back to Rosemount. ML sided out, but Rosemount couldn't get the side out and ML went up 23-21. Both teams traded side outs before Stahlke ended the match with another kill out of the middle to the right side. ML sided out at .643, Rosemount .308.

It was clear the inability to get the first ball side out hampered Rosemount's chances for success.
